Cannon-Jacob primary race getting national attention over immigration debate
ABC 4 ^ | 24 JUNE 2006 | ABC 4

Tuesday, Utahns all over the state will be heading to their new electronic voting machines.

Tuesday is primary day in Utah and the hottest contest is in Utah's third congressional district.

There, two republicans - incumbent Chris Cannon and challenger John Jacob - have been battling it out over the issue of immigration.

This race is also attracting national attention because it's viewed as a barometer of how the immigration issue sits with voters; One candidate is accusing the other of being too soft on the issue.

Monday's debate aired on KNRS 570 AM, ABC 4's sister radio station.

Recent polls show Cannon with a slight edge, but with enough undecided voters to keep Jacob within striking distance. At this point, pollsters believe the race is too close to call.

"Utah voters don't care about that, CWO. They're more concerned about Cannon's pro-AMNESTY statements and his pro-AMNESTY voting record."

Yes, that would explain how Cook lost at the convention.

What about Jacob's pro-amnesty stance?

Uh, for the one-hundred thousandth time, Jacob "pro-amnesty" is merely a proposal mirrored in the Pence plan.

How exactly do you benefit from illegal aliens?

I don't benefit personally or professionally.

If you asked me that because I support Cannon, you are very confused.

What time will you be at the polls tomorrow?

Still no comments about Cannon's past pro-illegal statements or the fact that he's endorsed by La Raza.

Merrill Cook?

Let's make an agreement. I won't make stupid uniformed statements about politicians in your state, and you don't make stupid uninformed statments about politicians in mine.

Merrill Cook is a three time loser for reasons TOTALLY unrelated to the issues.

Which Tancredo calls an amnesty and Pence a traitor. Go look at Team America's home page. Your support for Tancredo makes no sense to me. Tancredo has now been the first member of the GOP House to suggest that Tom Delay should stand down, Called fellow conservative Pence a traitor on immigration, backed a nutcase in a race against another good conservative and endorsed Bilbray who is now in trouble in the House for his total support of earmarks. You my friend are backing a true RINO.

... it's the giving the money to the person on the student visa, it's the fastpass proposal.

Yep.

Fastpass is amnesty and having a lawyer circumvent student visa laws is pathetic.

Of course, you are aware that Bay Buchanan is a Mormon and has a home in Utah? In my book that gives here more than a little say in this issue.

If Tancredo can get involved in Utah politics then the field is open to all of us to get involved. Deal with it.

Quarterback Bay Buchanan, of Team America, steps up to the line of scrimmage and surveys the playing field, trying to read the defense: 1. At the Utah Republican Convention she blasts John Jacob as being weak on immigration. She and her organization endorse Merrill Cook (in fact she nominates him) against Chris Cannon in Utah’s Third District. Fair enough. After all, Jacob had called Tom Tancredo, founder of Team America, “an opportunist,” and implied some harsher things.

What a mess.

"Merrill Cook is a three time loser for reasons TOTALLY unrelated to the issues."

So the buchanan's and Tancredo PAC picked a three time loser for their first choice and had to settle for Jacobs when he (Cook) lost again.

Amazing.

Some of the others, who have been busy trashing her for being so involved in this election, are aware and conviently ignore the fact.

Then Bay should really be fuming about the Mormon Church's reception of Fox when he went to Utah. Or the long time missionary work of the LDS in Mexico.

Wow. I didn't know that, either. Thought she was a Roman Catholic.

I have Buchananite friends who will tell me that isn't true, and will be devastated when I give them the link that proves it.
