The security of the border should be the No. 1 priority for an immigration bill, Sen. Arlen Specter said yesterday, and he's open to a compromise that sets goals for border and interior enforcement ahead of a guest-worker program and path to citizenship for illegal aliens.
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said that in order for Congress to produce an immigration bill this year, President Bush must lobby personally on specific details in the bill -- something he has not done.
"The president's got to be there. He's got to get involved, in my opinion, in the negotiations. Now, he has not yet been willing to do that," the Pennsylvania Republican told editors and reporters at The Washington Times.
He said Mr. Bush has participated only at the level of "generalization" and is going to have to do far more to convince lawmakers "that the border's going to be secure, that employer verification's going to happen. That's the crunch time."
Mr. Specter would be chairman of the conference when the House and Senate meet to hammer out the differences between their bills.
The House focused on building 700 miles of fence on the U.S.-Mexico border, boosting enforcement and requiring employers to verify that their workers are here legally. The Senate bill boosts enforcement but focuses on creating a program for future immigrant workers and a path to citizenship for many current illegal aliens.
House Republican leaders announced last week that they will hold hearings across the country to examine the Senate bill, and Mr. Specter responded by proposing hearings of his own.

He's borderline.
LOLOLOLOL
LOL. I guess even snarlin' arlen is hearing from constituents. He is clearly desperate to get an amnesty bill passed and will pretend to support anything else to do that. Of course, the devil is in the details; and the details he will support will provide for some symbolic border security plus amnesty. No matter what he says.
Scottish Law / Hadrian's Wall / etc. etc. etc.
But what has he actually done to make that a more likely outcome, from his position as Senator?
...
Arlen the proctologist has his head in the right place, to find a nugget now and again.
Did Sen. Specter vote in the affirmative on S.2611? If so then doesn't that action stand in opposition to such comments as "the security of the border should be the No. 1 priority".
Specter never refers to the taxpayer's or even voter's wishes. To him, only the elitist Roman like Senate counts.
Sometimes I think Arlen is more slick with his words than old Billy Clinton.
He says what people want to hear, then says something different later on when public opinion changes.
He's always been good at that and in the end he plays both sides with his votes (thumbs down Bork and thumbs up Thomas).
A slick "moderate" and a man of no convictions other than getting re-elected and staying in office.
It sounds to me like "Magic Bullet" is looking for a way out for himself and the other gutless Congress people relative to their stance on the Immigration Problem, which has the entire country angry at them. If he can get President Bush to more actively involve himself in the legislative process (which is a Congressional responsibility and activity)it will allow them cover for their angry voters since "...the President pressured" them into taking their (cowardly) legislative positions.
You should be gratified to see things shifting so far in the direction you favor. Someday you may even appreciate that Bush got this ball rolling.
What concerns me here, is why hasn't Bush sent up the candidates for judgeships? What's he waiting for, Christmas? By that time, after the mid-terms, it may be too late. You'd think he'd get on the ball about something so important. Even Specter is grousing about it. Plus, with regard to the immigration bill, Specter and Bush are both on the same side of the issue. Specter is spouting Bush's desires on the matter of illegal immigration. So when knocking Specter on this, you had better knock Bush too as they are twins of the mind here.
The trouble is...they don't enforce existing laws. Why would anyone believe they would enforce new laws on the books?
I have friends that live in modest suburban homes. Homeowners are renting (or selling) to illegals. They have multiple people living there, do not take care of the property and allow chickens and other farm animals to wander around their yards. Some of the men make blatant sexual comments to her teenage daughters. She is selling her house, but will be lucky to break even. Most illegals don't pay taxes, but their kids are enrolled in school, and they obtain free medical at emergency rooms. The taxpayers are being taken to the cleaners.
I guess that the President is absolutely thrilled with Spectre's payback for the President's support in the primary!
The security of the border should be the No. 1 priority for an immigration bill, Sen. Arlen Specter
Arlen, Arlen (tsk-tsk).
Herin lies the problem you BONEHEAD.
Which by the way, we know exactly where you're ready to shove said Banana and WE don't like it.
