3 Abu members linked to Korean kidnapping captured
Sun.Star ^ | 7/30/06 | Al Jacinto

SECURITY forces captured three members of the Abu Sofia group implicated in the 2002 kidnapping of a South Korean citizen in the southern Philippines, officials said on Friday. Officials said policemen, backed by soldiers, stormed a terrorist hideout in the village of Bulalo in Maguindanao's Sultan Kudarat town and arrested the trio Thursday afternoon. "They are all under interrogation and the capture of the three men was the result of a long intelligence operation. We finally got them," said Col. Frank del Prado, a spokesman for the Army's 6th Infantry Division. He said soldiers seized automatic weapons from the three men who were linked to the kidnapping of Jae Keon Yoon and Filipino hotel owner Carlos Belonio in Palimbang town in Sultan Kudarat province in February 06, 2002.
Belonio was accompanying Yoon, a guest at his Tierra Verde Hotel, to buy nickel bars purportedly recovered from a Japanese wartime hoard when they were kidnapped. Yoon was freed after 22 weeks in captivity, while the Filipino had been released earlier after private negotiators allegedly paid huge ransom. Philippine authorities previously blamed the kidnapping to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Pentagon Gang, blamed for the spate of killings and abductions in the province. Del Prado said troops were tracking down other members of the Abu Sofia group, also tagged as behind the series of killings and bombings in the southern Philippines.
"The Abu Sofia is allied with the terrorist Abu Sayyaf group. The Sofia is known to provide sanctuary to members of the Abu Sayyaf and both groups are involved in terrorism. There is an operation against the terrorists," he said. Police in June 2002 had captured Ismael Binago, the deputy leader of the Abu Sofia, involved in Yoon's kidnapping, in the port city of General Santos, about 1,037 kilometers south of Manila. Police agents disguised themselves as beggars and egg peddlers for weeks to be able to penetrate the village where Binago was hiding and gather information about the Abu Sofia that led to his eventual arrest.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SEATTLE - Officials stepped up security at both synagogues and mosques Saturday as authorities investigated a shooting at a Jewish organization that killed an employee and wounded five others, including a pregnant woman.
Police arrested Naveed Afzal Haq, 30, after the shooting Friday afternoon and he was booked for investigation of homicide and attempted homicide, police said. They were investigating the shooting as a hate crime."
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Yousef Shehadeb, 46, a member of the Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities, recalled Haq as quiet and something of a loner. Shehadeb said he and Haq's father, Mian Haq, both work at the Hanford nuclear reservation, as do many members of the area's Muslim community."

"Iranian leader calls Chavez a 'trench mate'"
AP on Yahoo ^ | 7/29/06 | Nasser Karimi - ap
Posted on 07/29/2006 10:36:36 PM PDT by NormsRevenge
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "TEHRAN, Iran - The presidents of Iran and Venezuela, leading U.S. critics, pledged Saturday to support one another in disputes with Washington, with the Iranian calling Hugo Chavez "a brother and trench mate."
As Chavez arrived for a two-day visit. Iran faced renewed international criticism for its nuclear program and for backing Hezbollah guerrillas in its war with Israel.
The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council on Friday reached a deal on a resolution that would give Iran until the end of August to suspend uranium enrichment or face the threat of economic and diplomatic sanctions. Iranian state radio said Saturday the government would reject the proposed resolution.
Chavez pledged that his country would "stay by Iran at any time and under any condition."
Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, said he saw in the Venezuelan president a kindred spirit. "I feel I have met a brother and trench mate after meeting Chavez," the state-run Iranian television quoted Ahmedinejad.
Chavez, who peppers his speeches with mentions of assassination plots and purported U.S. efforts to oust him, said he admired the Iranian president for "his wisdom and strength."
He invited Iranian oil companies to invest in Venezuela. Venezuelan state TV also reported that the countries are considering having Iran participate in a natural gas project off the Venezuelan coast. The two nations are members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries Iran is the world's No. 2 oil exporter and Venezuela No. 5.
"We are with you and with Iran forever. As long as we remain united we will be able to defeat (U.S.) imperialism, but if we are divided they will push us aside," Chavez said.
Since taking office in 1999, Chavez has emerged as one of Latin America's most outspoken critics of U.S. foreign policy. He takes his message against what he calls President Bush's "imperialist" government everywhere he goes.
During his trip, Chavez is to meet Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian state television said."

Tetovo Mystery Slasher on Islamist Payroll
Balkanalysis.com ^ | 07/29/2006 | Balkanalysis.com Security & Intelligence Brief
Posted on 07/30/2006 3:33:05 AM PDT by tgambill
(Balkanalysis.com Security & Intelligence Brief 9) The knife-wielding attacker who terrorized young Macedonian women in the Albanian-majority city of Tetovo during June is not the deranged lunatic as some of the media has portrayed him to be, says a high security services source in Skopje. According to this source, the attacker (allegedly, a young Albanian male from Tetovo) is a known Wahhabi sympathizer. Islamist groups in Tetovo and Skopje with financial and ideological links to Saudi Arabia reportedly paid the man to prowl the streets by night and terrorize young women wearing Western attire not deemed to be sufficiently modest for their strict interpretation of Islam. Skopje newspaper Vreme, summing up the story on July 3, noted that three attacks had occurred, after which six different men had been arrested and released without the real attacker ever having been found. The paper compared the palpable panic being felt in Tetovo with a similar occurrence in Veles in 2003, when a knife-wielding assailant struck fear in the hearts of local residents. However, that individual was finally caught. The infamous concept of a self-appointed Sharia police known in places like Iran, Pakistan and now Iraq has never before been seen in Macedonia. While the attacker has been portrayed as mentally unstable and prone to violence, our source says, that is just the image. He is not crazy. The brothers [i.e., the Islamists] are paying him to do these attacks- and some of the police may be protecting him, too.
