Krauthammer: Israel's Existence at Stake
Washington Post Writers Group ^ | July 14, 2006 | Charles Krauthammer

WASHINGTON -- Next June will mark the 40th anniversary of the Six Day War. For four decades we have been told that the cause of the anger, violence and terror against Israel is its occupation of the territories seized in that war. End the occupation and the "cycle of violence'' ceases.

The problem with this claim was that before Israel came into possession of the West Bank and Gaza in the Six Day War, every Arab state had rejected Israel's right to exist and declared Israel's pre-1967 borders -- now deemed sacred -- to be nothing more than the armistice lines suspending, and not ending, the 1948-49 war to exterminate Israel.

But you don't have to be a historian to understand the intention of Israel's enemies. You only have to read today's newspapers.

Exhibit A: Gaza. Just last September, Israel evacuated Gaza completely. It declared the border between Israel and Gaza an international frontier, renouncing any claim to the territory. Gaza became the first independent Palestinian territory in history. Yet the Gazans continued the war. They turned Gaza into a base for launching rocket attacks against Israel and for digging tunnels under the border to conduct attacks like the one that killed two Israeli soldiers on June 25 and yielded a wounded hostage brought back to Gaza. Israeli tanks have now had to return to Gaza to try to rescue the hostage and suppress the rocket fire.

Exhibit B: South Lebanon. Two weeks later, on July 12, the Lebanese terror organization, Hezbollah, which has representation in the Lebanese parliament and in the Cabinet, launched an attack into Israel that killed eight soldiers and wounded two, who were brought back to Lebanon as hostages.

What's the grievance here? Israel withdrew from Lebanon completely in 2000.

True and not true.

I'm very glad he's speaking up. In the natural, he's quite right.

Howsomever . . . Given that there IS ALMIGHTY GOD IN HIS HEAVEN . . . ISRAEL'S SURVIVAL HAS NEVER BEEN AT STAKE AND NEVER WILL BE . . . As God told Abraham . . . as long as the stars, moon etc. are in their courses. My paraphrase.

However, evidently God is going to discipline Israel to within a hair's breadth of it's extinction for the people's forsaking of fellowship/relationship/dialogue with HIM.

Going to get interesting, folks.

These are trying times. Throughout its brief history Israel has faced every threat imaginable and overcome it. Now it faces a fanatical genocidal Islamofascism on its borders backed by its archenemy, Iran. Now Israel is truly fighting a war of no alternative. This was not a war of choice. The issue has never been "the occupation." No, the real issue has always been Israel's very existence. Iran's dictator put it squarely on the table in very candid terms: Israel must be wiped off the map. And you can imagine, the Jewish people are unlikely to voluntarily submit to the prospect of a Second Holocaust. When their backs are to the wall, they will do whatever they must to survive. Here is where Israel's enemies have always underestimated the indomitable spirit of this small country and its perpetually besieged people. Jewish history is about enduring against the greatest of odds. I have no doubt that Jewish history will not come to an end, that the Jewish people will unite to maintain their hard-won sovereignty, purchased with the blood of their sons, in their ancient homeland. Am Yisrael Chai.

(The Palestinian terrorist regime is the crisis and Israel's fist is the answer.)

"And you can imagine, the Jewish people are unlikely to voluntarily submit to the prospect of a Second Holocaust."

This is not a Second Holocaust. Islamofascism is simply an extension of the Nazi Holocaust and anyone supporting them MUST be considered Nazi collaborators. How can anyone be expected to negotiate with fanatics whose goal is to exterminate every Jew on the planet?

I am not Jewish, but when I hear American Jews taking up the cause of the oppressed peoples of the Occupied Territories it makes my blood curdle.

Comforting to know that the Nazi Islamists are 'doing the work of the Lord'. . .and we need not worry about Israel as they receive their 'just desserts' delivered by the terrorists.

Allah ackbar!

Hmmm... About 199 times in the Old Testament, we read passages like this "And the children of Israel rebelled, so God allowed their enemies to come against them...."

There is a silver lining in this very dark cloud.

The charade of "if only there were a Palestinian homeland.." and "if only Israel gave up its 'occupation'" are exposed for the cynical sham they are.

It is obvious to all now that the question is Israel's existence. Nations and people can come down on either side of this question, but they can no longer hide from it or divert attention elsewhere.

The ? is, where do we stand? Rice has told Israel to show constraint. Did she really mean that or is she just being PC? Why should they hold back? The time has come.

So. . .okay. ..199 times in the Old Testament we have confirmation that the Islamo-nazis are - as they claim themselves - doing God's work.

And given they are doing the same to Christians; I guess we can conclude that today's Christians deserve the same as the early Christians. . .as these terrorists are delivering now. . .

Perhaps we do deserve a 'Islamic World leadership. . .and a 'Muslim America'. . .perhaps it IS God's Will. . .or God's Justice. . .perhaps we should not be fighting these people at all; given that we deserve their 'justice'. . .

I don't think there is any question where we stand. There is a question of what we will do to back up our stance.

IMHO, it needs to be said loudly and over and over again: The people attacking Israel are identical to our enemies in the WOT - the ones who are trying to kill us.

This cannot be repeated enough. And if this very clear connection is made, then how we support Israel becomes a no brainer. They are our front line primary allies in a war for both our survivals.

IMHO I agree with all you said.
We should stand to allow Israel to do what she wants and protect her from any other actions from any other countries.

How about before you just continue mouthing off a bunch of nonsense, you go read it for yourself. I didn't write it.

Kofi Anan and his UN buddie club expect that?

He's absolutely right about all this. And, in view of the degree and kind of response Israel is making in this, it is really naive to assume that the Israelis are aiming for anything short of absolute resolution to the situation this time. The genie is OUT of the bottle. The UN has NO card to play, thanks to its demonstrated record of anti Summit's in resolving Middle East discord to this point... among numerous other and very public UN failings world wide.
