Vatican condemns Israel for attacks on Lebanon VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were "an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into "a conflict with international repercussions."
"In particular, the Holy See deplores right now the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its closeness to these people who already have suffered so much to defend their independence," he told Vatican Radio.
Israel struck Beirut airport again on Friday and bombed Lebanese roads, power supplies and communication networks in a widening campaign after Hizbollah guerrillas seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight.
Sodano said the Vatican condemned both "terroristic attacks" and military reprisals.
Hizbollah, which wants to trade its captives for prisoners held in Israel, has showered rockets across the frontier in its fiercest bombardment since 1996 when Israel launched a 17-day blitz against southern Lebanon and Hizbollah. ADVERTISEMENT
But Sodano reserved his harshest words for Israel.
"The right of defence on the part of a state does not exempt it from its responsibility to respect international law, particularly regarding the safeguarding of civilian populations," he said.
I'm Roman Catholic.
The Vatican is DEAD WRONG.
Ping the list!
quoting Flower:
"these people?" Wow, what a nasty little slur. For someone who is telling "these people" to get a clue about the Old Testament and such, maybe you should take your own advise and not speak about things you don't anything about.
no slur.. just a fact... period... & i do know what i'm talking about.
i don't see anything in Scripture allowing prayer to anyone other than GOD.
who is the Lord's prayer addressed to ??
why don't Catholics obey Christ & pray to GOD in Christ's name as He directed ?
praying to the dead is a violation of GOD's command to NOT consult the dead. consulting the dead is aka spiritism amongst pagans.
why do Catholics mimic pagans by praying to the dead ?
I really don't understand the Vatican's stance on this? If the Pope thinks he can persuade the Palestinian terrorists to lay down their weapons, why doesn't he go there himself?
This doesn't compute. How can you be disappointed in something that you expected?
One might ask the same question of the Baptist Church, or the Lutheren Church, or the Episcopalian Church, or the Methodist Church, or the Church of Christ, or the.......
Why is it always the Catholic Church that is singled out for criticism?
If your answer is "The Vatican is the one who made an announcement" then my reply to you is, "The Vatican is a soverign state. They have to make some sort of comment." And they did denounce the terrorist attacks as well.
Just one more reason I have no respect for the Catholic church.
Consistent? I don't think you can maintain "consistent". Pius during WWII would be a notable exception.
And it certainly sounds like you are saying that disagreeing with you ipso facto makes one foolish. Count me among the fools who think you might be wrong as opposed to the wise who know you never are.
Nice hats, though.
LOL!! Did you post that with a straight face? That some individuals in the Church have expressed anti-semitic views does not mean that the Church's teachings have been anti-semitic. That's like saying the United States is anti-semitic because David Duke lives here.
>>"As in the past, the Holy See also condemns both the terrorist attacks on the one side and the military reprisals on the other. Indeed, a State's right to self-defense does not exempt it from respecting the norms of international law, especially as regards the protection of civilian populations."<<
It is easier to believe the statements by Reuters than the actual statement by the Vatican.
Some people just don't get it.
If they stated that George Bush made such a statement, everyone here would be researching it, but because it is the Pope, Reuters would NEVER slant what was said.
I don't agree. The European Catholics and the American liberal Catholics are mad at him for being such a "hard-liner". He refuses to go along with popular liberal theology. He's no weenie.
ok....
you people....
now what ??
Unbelievable. Let me go on record as being in wajor disagreement with the Vatican on this.
Many would disagree about Pius being a friend of the jews. It is not a clear cut thing, by any stretch.
This is predictable.. what can the Vatican say? Go slaughter folks?
They said the right thing, they agreed Israel has a right to defend itself, but called on it to avoid killing civilians if possible.... That's basically the fundamental tenant of civilized warfare (yes I know oxymoron).
Hezbollah still is not officially the government of Lebanon... even though they basically control everything... son on Paper the Vatican and most diplomats must say Israel is behaving badly, even when they know Hezbollah runs much of Lebanon's government albeit behind the scenes.
"Infallibility aside, he's still a Euroweenie.
I don't agree. The European Catholics and the American liberal Catholics are mad at him for being such a "hard-liner". He refuses to go along with popular liberal theology. He's no weenie."
I see, Thou shalt not criticise the Pope.
Nah, he's an Euroweenie appeaser who is unable to see when the time to fight has arrived.
Point taken. I am a LCMS Lutheran, and I can't say I've heard alot of friendly things said in my church about the state of Israel. Sad.
"why don't Catholics obey Christ & pray to GOD in Christ's name as He directed ?"
So your saying that Catholics don't pray in Christ's name and you know that as a fact? I'm sorry you're so misinformed because that is absolutely no true. And as far as praying to "dead" people, those in Heaven are more alive than you and I are on Earth. Apparently you think Heaven is full of dead people.
