Why the failures persist and how to fix them have perplexed four successive attorneys general and four State Police superintendents.

Ho! Ho! I'll just bet it did. Heck, they know why, and they know it would be political suicide to even hint at the reason.

I've seen this type of political correctness in the Border Patrol. The result has been an epidemic of corruption and incompetence. I hope the citizens of these precincts have plenty of Vaseline.

I don't know anything about this PD specifically but I would assume that they dumbed down "problematic" aspects of the admissions back in the 70's or 80's and that this article is referring to a problem on top of that.

Getting into the NJ State Police is incredibly difficult. No one who knows the system could tell you with a straight face that it wasn't an old boys club before the incident that brought the NAACP in.

It's pretty much an employment for life situation where you will make over 2 times the median NJ income (most make 3 times the median income when overtime and benefits are included) and be given very good benefits and a reverse pension option to have your future pension pay off your home mortgage today. All the Troopers work insane amounts of overtime the last years before they retire, and massage the pension system to further increase their pensions. They end up with a very nice nest egg after 24 years in.

The people who guard their organization's recruitment are extremely weary about accepting people who will bring poor public scrutiny upon this sweetheart deal.

Interesting points. And there was recently an article here on FR about the "sweetheart deals" that NJ police have.
