Yes. I'm just trying to understand. Is that wrong?

Freedom is a very valuable commodity. But unless it is re-purchased be each ensuing generation or it will lose its value. Those young men are buying freedom for the next generation.
We, here in the U.S. no longer value it, preferring our football, beer and fast cars. Sadly, unless we regain our senses, we will lose all those comforts we so foolishly treasure.
For all the years there have been people, there have been wars. In each of those wars young men have sacrificed their lives for purposes that seemed - to others - foolish. It will go on until there are no more people. I believe it was Plato who said "only the dead have seen the end of war."

Not at all. And your understanding is important.

Damn, what a refreshing post. No BS, no posturing, just realism based on a factual understanding of reality.

I think his (and my) concern is that the left and the media have made combat more dangerous my not using our superior firepower for fear of "civilian" casualties. This reduces the clear advantages of a technologically advanced civilization. Jenin is, in my opinion, a very good example of this squeamishness--many young men were killed because Israel was overly concerned with the possibility of killing "noncombatants".

Thank you. There ain't much good that can be gained from 72 years - except experience. Even bad experiences can give good lessons to anyone who pays attention. I've been lucky to be able to learn from the bad experiences of others - mostly. I hope it continues that way.

So, who is the enemy? Who, or what, stands in the way of reducing warfare to killing the enemy to prevent them from killing you?

It is a rhetorical question, because I know you know the answer.

Yes, if there is some place for the bad guys to hide and then move to the freshly made ruins [i.e. if the destruction is rather gradual in time].

I'm unfamiliar with the construction in that area, but in many cases, there's no need to "move out and then back in"...basements, or just cover from blasts is enough. Remember that unconfined high explosive blasts are very inefficient at transferring energy into a target, and short of FAE or nuke blasts, it's difficult to thoroughly pulverize structures into dust! :-)

They are doing fine. Discussing the pros or cons of tactical strategies and operations here even with the limited information we have is like conducting an AAR (After action Review) with the enemy listening. A bad Idea..

Well, this is why a 'combined arms' move is typically done. Their 'commanding view' would be outdone by the aerial view from Apache's, Kiowas, J-STARS, C130 gunships, etc over the battlefield.

Ground troops, light armor, heavy armor, air support and artillery support all work together.

As previously noted, like Cassino Italy or anywhere in Germany or Russia in WW2 the rubble makes it easier to hide. How high is the rubble of a four story building? High enough that a tank gunner can not see beyond it. It might as well be a hedge.

If you leave a few walls in place with windows, it at least gives you targeting ability when they do shoot at you.

You would think the IDF learned its lesson in Jenin

???
You do know that Jenin was a complete fraud on the part of the Palies, dont you?

I'm talking about the 23 IDF soldiers who were killed in ambush in Jenin, not the thousands of imaginary Palestinian casualties.

OK, just checking. Just like us, I think they have to re-learn combat every time.

You are absolutely correct. The anti-war types have made war almost impossible to win, consequently they have made it more probable that more people will be killed in the long run.
