Watch Mike Pence Pander To The New York Times
C-Span ^ | July 29, 2006 | Ajay

Watch Mike Pence Today (Saturday, 7/29/2006) On C-Span I Time: 5:17PM, Eastern Time Time: 2:17PM, Pacific Time

Presentation by Mike Pence and Dick Lugar at the National Press Club, Washington, D.C., Federal Media Shield Legislation

I saw most of this on Friday night on C-Span. I've gone through their schedule and the only other time it's been scheduled is the time shown above. If you want to see what makes Mikee run, please tune in or set a tape. The Press Club's drive-by media audience usually has some very hostile questions for conservative speakers. But Pence was treated as an ally though there were several questions trying hard to elicit attacks on the Bush Administration. Watch this program in order to decide for yourself whether Pence was pandering to the National Press Club and the NY Times, etc.

I watched Pence closely at a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee during June of 2005. Chairman James Sensenbrenner was trying to demonstrate the absurdity of charges against America by Amnesty International. Among other things, Amnesty International had reported that Guantanamo was an "American Gulag." Sensenbrenner made a gutsy effort to bring some accountability to these Hate-America creeps--their leader, Chip Pitts was the main witness. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Pence (there was another Republican, Congressman Coble, who supported him) undermined the Chairman's effort at every turn. They sucked up to witness Pitts, who refused to back off the Gulag accusation. For reasons it's hard for me to understand, they seemed to show boundless admiration for Amnesty International and Chip Pitts. When the guerilla theater put on by the "guests" seemed to be getting out of hand, Chairman Sensenbrenner banged the gavel and adjoined the hearing. At least, Pence didn't stay for the unofficial hearing the AI people tried to keep going--he left behind Sensenbrenner. I think Pence's behavior may be motivated by craving the approval of the NY Times and its media clones. I hate to have to think this of a so-called "conservative leader."

I think that the NY Times editor and reporters and their leakers are traitors in my meaning of the word. They publicized classified information that will very likely result in the deaths of more Americans. Why would anyone want to give them special protections that other Americans do not have. You and I must answer truthfully after being subpoenaed by a grand jury investigating a crime. Reporters should be treated no better or worse.

Imagine this under a reporter's shield law. A clever and unethical reporter could carefully concoct a false story to hurt someone he wants to wound. If the unethical reporter wanted to attribute his story to anonymous sources, and had carefully set up his fraud, there would be no way to prove the falseness of the story. And God knows, there are plenty of unethical reporters.

When these congressmen get the presidential itch there ARE fun to watch. Pence plans to run for the Senate or Governor of Indiana in a few years and then become the GOP's next McCain.

To do that he's got to make nice-nice to the national media. Well, he's started.

I think he should be more subtle--a clever politician should not be in too much in a hurry since he's more likely show his hand.

I forgot to say that they say the people in the Senate pushimg the Shield Law, in addition to Lugar, are:

Senator Chris Dodd
Senator Arlen Specter
Senator Ted Kennedy (I think)

There were others but rather than misreport, I'll watch the program again this afternoon.

So, where did Pence pander?

You Pence bashers are disgusting. He's the most conservative Republican in Congress and he's still not good enough for you 100 percenters.

Turn to C-Span and judge for yourself. Listen my good man--If Tom DeLay is a great conservative, as I truly believe, Mike Pence, despite all the hype, is no Tom Delay. Tom DeLay never craved approval from the N.Y. Times as Mike Pence so clearly does.

If you are a truly extremely, extreme extremist, you surely would understand what Pence "really" wants to accomplish with
his Press Shield Law. Except on taxing and spending and on Right to Life, I don't see that much difference between Mike Pence and Arlen Specter, a great proponent of Pence's Press Shield Law in the U.S. Senate.

Recording from C-SPAN1 to my PC right now. I'll watch it and see what Pence has to say. I may provide excerpts later if there's anything especially noteworthy.

I hope everyone was listening to Pence and is to Lugar right now. Pence's bill, he himself says, would require that the government show that a crime had been committed before asking a journalist to turn over any information. But it seems to me that this would block a grand jury from INVESTIGATING WHETHER A CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED. Thanks Mike.

He mentioned Judith Miller, but I didn't see anything that made me think that he was pandering to the New York Times.

I do find the timing of this legislation unfortunate. Here we're trying to take down the New York Times for publishing leaked secrets thereby aiding and abetting the enemy, and now we're considering legislation that may make it harder to find out who leaked.

Well, Pence and Lugar have just finished pandering to the New York Times (actually this National Press Club affair occurred on Tuesday).

Now, let's keep watching the New York Times editorial page to catch their editorial of admiring praise for Pence and Lugar. It should come after a decent interval. I'm sure our two "conservatives" will appreciate the approval of the NY Times. IMHO, that's the main motivation for all this sucking up.

We'll have to agree to disagree on pandering. I could name some other Republicans and nearly all Democrats who I believe crave the approval of the New York Times, the Washington Post, NBC,ABC, CBS, CNN, etc. Kind of makes me wonder why I bother to vote.

I guess I should end this on a happier note. Just think of Tom DeLay, Dick Cheney, President Bush, Henry Hyde, Don Rumsfeld, Senator Santorum, Senator Coburn, Senator Inhofe, Senator Jon Kyle, Zell Miller and others. They don't care a rat's ass what the NY Times thinks of them.

On the other hand, you have the likes of Lindsey Graham who wakes up every morning thinking of nothing else.

Tom DeLay didn't think government spent a dime on pork. All of those politicians you listed have some deep flaws.
