Fri 28 Jul 2006 Naked Scandinavians leave Albanian police speechless
TIRANA - Albanian police were speechless when around 30 Scandinavian women went topless, shocking local bathers and causing an uproar in an Albanian beach resort.
"Police only watched ... they could not approach the tourists because they spoke no English," a local newspaper in the southern Albania coastal town of Sarande said.
Albanian mothers dragged their children away and police received a barrage of complaints over the Scandinavian tourists.
The Scandinavians left after two hours when their guide was informed that nude bathing was banned on public beaches. Nudity and topless bathing are still taboo in the poor Balkan country.
When did Scandivanians et al make English their national language?
Then you shouldn't have posted this.
"Nudity and topless bathing are still taboo in the poor Balkan country."
Well if they want to attract more tourists...
This reminds me of an encounter at the Outerbanks of North Carolina some years ago. I was there with my childhood best friend and our daughters. We were approached on the beach by two men that we still refer to as "Hans and Frans" who asked us in a very thick Scandanavian accent where they could change clothes. We tried to relate to them that there was nowhere on the beach to change clothes. Lo and behold, they went under one of the beach houses and literally changed clothes behind a supporting beam, and came out a few minutes later in teenie little speedos. Fortunately our daughters were playing in the water and didn't witness any of this....errrrr....Scandanavian culture.
"NorwegianWood Funniest part of the entire post mandingo. I caught that."
There's a radio station that I caught a couple of weeks ago, whose call letters are something like WUDD or KWUD, something like that...their morning drive talk show is, you guessed it, Morning WUDD.
Most Scandinavians under age 50 speak pretty good English, and many speak it with little if any accent. A Finn and a Norwegian can't understand each other's language, so they will invariably speak English to each other.
The Dutch and Germans use a lot of English too, and speak it exceptionally well as a rule. I think speakers of the Germanic/Nordic language family (of which Anglo-Saxon is one) have an easier time picking up the phonemes of English than do speakers of other languages.

Topless Scandinavian women, or perverts from all over the world to come gawk at them?

"Topless Scandinavian women, or perverts from all over the world to come gawk at them?"
Both...I think there is some sort of symbiosis there.
I'm not sure that the average Balkan woman looks like...may want to keep that under wraps
English is used as a common language in much of Europe. Two people might not speak each other's language, but they often both speak English.
The Scandinavians not speaking English is strange though. Every one I met spoke English well, and the Swedes I've met -- without exception -- spoke English better than most Americans and with little accent. I was once mistaken for a Swede by a German just because he heard me speaking English.
Mark Steyn recently quoted a Swedish government official who said "We must be kind to the Moslems so that when they are in the majority they will be kind to us."
I am happy you did not have pics
"The Scandinavians not speaking English is strange though."
While not clear in the article, I think they mean the Albanian police did not speak English.
Ping.....ping......ping ...ping..ping
