Reign, Reuters issued a kill order on the pic. What more do you need?

I'm not arguing that the photo wasn't faked, and badly. The only point in contention, on which I might be a minority of one, is that the evidence doesn't point to a political agenda.

The GIF you posted as evidence that the photo was doctored to make it more lurid did not compare the doctored August 5 photo to the undoctored one-- it compared the doctored photo a completely different one from July 26.

I doubt it. His ass is grass. Even if you don't believe Reuters is interested in integrity, you'd better believe that it's interested in not being publicly embarrassed like this. The editor who approved this to go out on the wire is probably packing up his desk,

this should be checked and rechecked. throughout the war I've seen the names of "journalists" from Reuters in Iraq that had blogs and web sites that were clearly aimed at publicizing propaganda and harsh attacks on the US. it is likely they are tipping off insurgents and causing more killing than meets the eye.

But the doctored photo doesn't make Beirut look any more wasted than the original.

FWIW, I thought it did. And I'm sure they thought that technique a lot safer than photoshopping a building that would turn out not to have been hit. It's all about nuance. And fortunately, they didn't get it right.

It's just stupid.

Well, if they were all that smart to begin with they wouldn't be shilling for terrorists, would they? It's not as though Reuters was cleaner than Caesar's wife to begin with.

Here's the email I just posted to Reuters:

In regards to your blatant doctoring of photos:

It is no wonder the "mainstream" media is losing readership/viewership. It has become necessary to take with a grain of salt any reporting by your journalists/photographers. AP is the same.

Your obvious bias and misrepresentation of the news is downright disgusting.

At least you pulled the doctored photo, after you were busted with the obvious deception. Of course this has led to countless blogs and researchers going back in time to see how many more photos Hajj has faked.

The alleged "massacre" at Qana, and his obviously staged photos from that location are just another reason to distrust any news/photos you provide from Lebanon.

Enjoy your tryst with Hezbollah, your days as a reputable news organization have been left by the wayside.

Walter Cronkite visited VietNam around the time of the '68 Tet offensive, one of the most decisive victories for the American and So V'Namese military. Cronkite went on TV and told the American people that Nam was "unwinnable" and he and the rest of the American press turned this victory into a loss. Think that could happen today

It cannot because today's Cronkites have been doing their damndest to execute that exact plan. They may have brought down public opinion some but fully 35% of the public is aware of their treachery. They can try all they want but they can't succeed unless the internet starts getting regulated.

Shouldn't Reuters subject ALL their photographs to simple statistical and technical tests prior to going out over the wires?

Statistical and technical tests? They should have someone look at them. I've been in a position to choose photos for publication, and the first (doctored) version of this one is not only would not have published, but I would have called the Reuters photo desk and asked them what they were smoking when they let it through.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen any media outlet that picked up this photo? Yahoo is fully automated, and picks up stories and photos straight off the wire. Did this slip past anyone other than Reuters that has actual human editors?

August 06, 2006 Reuters Doctoring Beirut Photos (Updated) Scroll down for updates. The photo below is attributed to Adnan Hajj, of the Reuters news agency. The photo alleges to show smoke covering the Beirut sky. The problem with the photo is that it is that it has been doctored to make it appear that an Israeli missile strike did much more damage than it actually did. Adnan Hajj also took the photos of dead children at Qana. Allegations have arisen that the Qana photos were part of a staged event put on by Hezbollah operatives. There is no doubt...

In my opinion, whoever doctored the image was clearly trying to make it look worse than it was, for whatever reason.

I disagree with people who imply that that the person was trying to do something artistic with the smoke, like insert some kind of shape, the visage of Jesus or whatever.

Digital manipulation of photos to be used in news media is a tricky business, how much are you allowed to alter legitimately using functions such as curves, color/saturation adjustment and such, and where do you draw the line?

Even legitimate functions such as unsharp mask can be used inappropriately for a biased agenda, if used in specific ways. Take for example, this well known case of USA Today and their manipulation of photos of Condi Rice:

In this case, USA Today apparently selected her eyes only and used high levels of unsharp mask to exaggerate them.

Was this demonic appearance an undesired result by USA Today? Not likely.

But I agree with you. I don't think this rank amateur at Reuters was trying to insert a subliminal message. They just wanted to make the Israeli "Boot on the neck of innocent Lebanon" appear much worse than it is.

Even that one looks a bit suspicious to me.It looks like 'smudge tool' use in evidence that might have been used to cover up the rubber stamp cloning.

I hope that people outside of FR begin to appreciate the very sinister and dangerous implications of a lying agenda driven propaganda machine that poses as todays mainstream media and the threat they pose to a free society. I believe that it is NOT enough to expose them for the frauds they are. That without any real consequences will only let them get better at their fraud. These people in my view are at best traitors and at worst are in league with our mortal enemies in an attempt to destroy us from within. To continue to let them perpetrate their lies without severe and real consequences is a recipe for disaster.

FWIW, I think I just figured out what Rooters was up to. In the undoctored pic, the source of the smoke is clearly coming from one one place/building. In the doctored version that's not as easily to see, especially if you're not examining the pic closely. A cursory glance might make you think that the IDF blew up an entire area of the city. Which was undountedly the intention.

al-Reuters hasn't lost the confidence of all its readers with this shameless attempted deception and Islamofascism boosterism--just the thinking readers.

Because al-Reuters' propaganda suits the purposes of the moonbat left and Euroweenies, the moonbat left and Euroweenies will continue to continue to stand by al-Reuters through fake and fraud.
