STOYSTOWN, Pa. -- It was a remarkable shot that produced a one-of-a-kind image: a green pasture, red barns in the distance and, against a brilliant blue and cloudless sky, a lone mushroom cloud of dark gray smoke.
Taken the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, seconds after United Airlines Flight 93 plunged into a nearby field, the eerie photo was, and still is, according to the FBI, the closest thing it's got to an image of the crash itself.
Val McClatchey snapped the single picture with her new digital camera. The wife and mother had been sitting on the edge of her sofa, clutching her second cup of coffee and watching the smoking towers of the World Trade Center on TV, when she heard the sudden surge of a plane engine, followed by a violent, house-shaking boom. Mrs. McClatchey grabbed the camera and ran onto the front porch of her house along Indian Lake.
"I didn't even aim. I was just like, 'Oh, my God,' " she said. She dropped the camera, jolting the battery loose, then tried in vain to call her husband, son and daughter. She had no idea what she'd captured until the state police put a call out to people in the area, asking for photos, debris and other evidence. She took a printout of her photo to the police, she said, and, within an hour, FBI agents were at her house.
Once the full, national scope of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks had settled in, word spread quickly of Mrs. McClatchey's photograph, and soon, everyone wanted to buy a copy.
"But it's not something that felt right," she said.

I have several pictures of the Pentagon smoke taken from my balcony at 9:42:48 AM, according to the EXIF data. Of course the camera may have been a few minutes off.
Also of the mysterious "last plane to land" being escorted by a fighter jet into Reagan National at 11:51 AM. It was a white private jet, about the size of a Learjet or Gulfstream. The rumor was that it was Colin Powell, but it was never definitive.

The next time you meet up with one of those whacky left-wing lunatics who tries to tell you to give peace a chance, here's what to do:
Listen politely while this person explains his views. Strike up a conversation if necessary and look very interested in his ideas. He will tell you how revenge is immoral, and that by attacking the people who did this to us, we will only bring on more violence. He will probably use many arguments, ranging from political to religious to humanitarian.
In the middle of his remarks, without any warning, kick him in the balls. When the guy gets up off the ground, he might be very angry and try to hit you, so be careful.
Very quickly and calmly remind the person that violence only brings about more violence and remind him of his stand on this matter.
Tell him if he is committed to a nonviolent approach to undeserved attacks, he will turn the other cheek and negotiate a solution.
Tell him he must lead by example if he really believes what he's saying.
Most people will think for a moment and then agree that you're probably correct. But as soon as does that, kick him in the balls again, only this time much harder, and keep kicking him in the balls until the idiot realizes how stupid his argument really is.
