...a thousand words...
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
This is a bit off the subject, but this seems like a good place to make people aware of it. Apparently (in U.S.) some "mandatory notification law" went into effect in July about patients consenting to have "biological waste" go to "anonymous genetic research programs or institutions". I was presented with this form, and checked the "NO" box and sign it (to the surprise of the clerk).
Here's all I know. Today I went for an x-ray concerning my ankle. Upon checking into the hospital, they did all the usual paperwork about insurance, etc, etc, and then the clerk stuck a one page, small-print paper in front of me to sign.
The gist was by NOT signing, the hospital assumes my permission to SEND ANY of my left-over blood from routine tests, or other "biological waste" to "places conducting medical research". The clerk explained to me how important research is and why they need to be able to take all this "leftover" stuff from patients.
In answer to my numerous questions, here's what I surmised:
My own blood or other things can be sent to any lab, university, hospital or research institute of their choosing, including those conducting researach using fetuses or stem-cells.
The research is not detemined in advance, but materials are given as demand is made from various institutions.
If I refuse to have my "waste" used for these purposes, it's "disposed of in the usual manner".
I could not get clarification on what is done specifically with "waste" other than blood or organs from operations. The clerk just assured me it was nothing to worry about because no one's name or information is attached to the stuff that they send out to researhers.
