Toyota's Lexus Tops Dependability Study; Ford Land Rover Ranks Last
DETROIT (AP) -- Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. won top honors in eight categories of a closely watched vehicle dependability study, more than any other company, while mainstream brands closed in on luxury nameplates, J.D. Power and Associates said Wednesday.
Lexus, Toyota's luxury brand, was the top-ranked nameplate for the 12th consecutive year. It was followed by Ford Motor Co.'s Mercury and General Motors Corp.'s Buick and Cadillac.
Last-place Land Rover, which is owned by Ford, lagged far behind the second-to-last brand, Saab, which is owned by GM. Land Rover owners reported 438 problems per 100 vehicles, while Saab owners reported 326.

Of course, Mercury (which last year finished ahead of Honda and Acura and 1 point behind Toyota) flew past Toyota into second place.
ALL of Ford's brands which they have owned for a considerable period of time are above the industry average. Only Land Rover and Volvo are below...
I remember when Saabs were like little Swedish tanks. You couldn't kill em...
Volvos used to be the same way.
only problem with this report is whether or not the problems reported by consumers were really problems with the car (ie repair bulletins were issues by the manufacturer) or consumer complaints of things they didn't like about the car but only found out after buying it (ie not really problems with the car but issues with the car driver not liking a how the car functions etc). I am not sure JD POWERS accounts for this.
I owned a 122 sedan. It had > 350,000 miles on the original 4 banger motor.
I will never own a Ford again, no matter what. They refuse to honor their warranty.
I always wonder why Lexus owners act to smug. They're Toyotas, after all, you snobs!
JD Power's initial quality study convolutes the data about design aspects consumers don't like... the dependability study is a different beast entirely....
Funny, I've never heard of anyone having the least bit of trouble. In fact, I've heard the exact opposite - coverage by Ford of repairs outside of warranty...
I once saw a V6 Toyota Camry XLE driving down the road with the following license plate:
BABYLEX
I thought it was a brilliant insight. :)
I didn't rely on anyone else's testimony. Personal experience.
Circa 1960, weren't Saabs 2 cycle?
Seem to remember having to add oil to the fuel.
And your point??
"Circa 1960, weren't Saabs 2 cycle?"
Yes, for a long time they were 2-cycle.
Only if you're inclined to think in gross generalities.
Some people who couldn't care less about Land Rover making crap cars might actually care if they find out it's owned by Ford.
I'll tell you about a good truck. I bought a Dakota (88 model) in December of 87. In 98, with 105,000 miles on it, I sold it to a friend. I only had to replace the water pump during that time. My friend is still driving it, he's replaced the fuel pump only. The paint is shot, the upholstery is torn, the dash is cracked, and the truck generally looks like a piece of crap. But it burns no oil, runs great, and has almost 200,000 miles on it.
I kick myself every time I see it. Wife totalled my 98 Chevy and my 2000 Chevy has a fuel guage sender that doesn't work, and it will cost $500 to fix it (the part alone ios $200!).
I think I'll buy a Toyota Tundra next time. Or maybe a Ram.
You buy a Ram you better have lots of money. I hear the gas mileage is terrible.
Alas, not sure if I could fork out the bucks for one, as transportation is a divestment of funds. A necessary divestment, but at $40-50K I start thinking about property, not a depreciating car. Plus, my Indian name is "Can only Afford a '72 Nova!"
I'll probably stay with what I have. I haven't had any other problems with the Silverado, and I get 15 MPG city and 21 highway (real time mileage, not EPA miles) with the Vortec V6. As for the fuel gauge, I just fill up every 150 - 200 miles.
The only drawback is pulling my 23 foot boat with the V6.
