Flying? New TSA Carry-On Baggage Rules

If you're flying soon, the rules concerning what you may and may not carry onto the plane with you just changed in response to the arrest in the United Kingdom of people accused of plotting to destroy aircraft bound from England to the United States by exploding liquids in their carry-on bags. Find out the details of this thwarted terrorist plot.

Effective Thursday, Aug. 10, travelers are no longer allowed to bring the following items on board the airliner: --All liquids of any kind, including drinks --Gels --Lotions and creams, including hand lotion and sunscreen --Contacts may be brought on board in their cases, but the cases cannot contain liquid. --Hairspray --Toothpaste --Shampoo and conditioner --Liquid makeup --Perfume --Anything else that has a liquid or gel-like consistency.

Higher security means long lines and chaos in airports nationwide.

If you bring any of these items through airport security, TSA agents will confiscate them from your carry-on luggage; however, you may still place them in checked luggage. Some exceptions are granted for passengers traveling with an infant or small child. Baby formula, juice, bottled breast milk and baby food are allowed, but they will be tested by the TSA to ensure they are not explosives. Prescription drugs, insulin and some nonprescription medication are also allowed with proper identification. The new procedures cover all flights, both international and domestic. Currently, laptop computers, cell phones and other electronic devices are allowed, but that is subject to change.

everyone should fly naked. but then we will have to go thru a floroscope to make sure a bomb hasnt been surgically implanted. i cant see an end to this yet there isnt really a good answer.

I think a lot of people are just going to stop flying until they implement some sanity with respect to screening of passengers!

I've only flown once since 9/11 and its not because of fear of terrorists - its because the security makes it no longer worth it to fly any place I can possibly drive to.

I'm not showing up three hours early for a two hour flight.

This is just a plot by the airlines to prevent those of us who have had bad checked-bags experiences, from carrying our bags on board.
They want the opportunity to loose/damage/destroy more luggage.

How the hell do you do this?

I travel from Indianapolis to Mississippi about seven or eight times a year. For the last five trips, we've driven (10 hours) in a rented and fully-loaded minivan. In fact, any trip under five hours and I drive.

If you count travel to and from the airport, waiting and checkin times, and all that other crap, the drive is worth it.

And we stop in at Dreamland (Tuscaloosa) every time we pass it ;)

Ugh. As usual, this will result in *more* deaths. The increased time and inconvenience will cause travellers on the margin to drive rather than fly, which is far more dangerous per mile.

I would stand in line for any number of hours to visit my kids.

Hadn't flown in about 20 years prior to 9/11 but I sure wasn't going to expect my kids to risk their lives flying home to visit family. We began flying to visit them.

Don't care how inconvenient it is......our family flies.....all the time. To europe and within the US.

its because the security makes it no longer worth it to fly any place I can possibly drive to.

Same here. Its not so much that the security takes long - its that you can't forecast how long it will take, so you have to take the worst-possible-case scenario, and arrive based on that, then sit captive in the airport.

Last time I flew, between the waiting and the flights (Cleveland<->Dallas), I went through three novels, three magazines, and I slept for half the flight.

My daughter in law has a 9 month hold. How are you supposed to travel on a plane without a bottle?

Ban everything except passengers that look like this guy.

And anybody whose name contains the letters "a.k.a."

Reading is FUNdamental. Had you read the article at the top of this thread, you'd have seen that baby formula is one of the exceptions.

Since you did not read the article, you came to an incorrect conclusion, causing me to waste some time explaining it to you.

I wonder if this ban includes stuff like Preparation H. Could be uncomfortable for some people. ;)

If they are not allowing any beverages then I hope the airlines will either start giving out small bottles of water, or even selling some right at the gate. I hate to board without it.

It does include Preparation H. I suggest applying it before going through security.
