Plane plot involved 'explosive cocktail,' official says

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Terrorists were in the "final stages" of a plot to simultaneously blow up as many as 10 jets leaving Britain for the U.S., sending the planes and thousands of passengers into the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.

British and Pakistani authorities teamed up to thwart the attacks, and 24 men were arrested in overnight raids in Britain, authorities said.

An undercover British agent infiltrated the group, giving the authorities intelligence on the alleged plan, several U.S. government officials said.

The men had not bought plane tickets, the officials said, but they were in the process of perusing the Internet to find flights to various cities that had similar departure times.

Two of the suspects recently traveled to Pakistan and later received money wired from there, senior U.S. government sources said.

Among those arrested were a Muslim charity worker and a Heathrow Airport employee with an all-area access pass, according to Britain's Channel 4.

The suspects were planning to stage a test run within a couple of days, said a U.S. intelligence official.

Thank the Lord they were stopped!

Liberal attitudes in government would have almost certainly seen them succeed!

hang 'the suspects'...plain and simple . We need to start making an example of any that would even attempt to do things like this . Silence the bleeding hearts and hang the terrorist bastards . No mercy . Hang them and then feed their bodies to sharks . Terrify them . It's the only way .

Watch the spin from the left....

"Nothing was going to happen today."

"They hadn't even done their dry-run."

"They weren't going to do anything for some time to come"

"They were entrapped, they never would have come up with this plot on their own."

Add your own....

I agree with the Hanging idea. But feed their bodies to pigs and then drop the pigs over Lahore.

I bet as soon as CNN learns what the "explosive cocktail" is, they'll publish it along with where to get the ingredients.

Sounds like these poor, destitute foreigners were not given rights to privacy, their right to commit a crime before being arrested, or their rights to move about freely.

Looks like these suspects forgot to read the NY Times article on our wire transfer monitoring program. More likely they wired the money before the program was exposed by the Times. I remember the editor of the Times claiming their story did not hurt the war on terror because everyone knew we were monitoring money transfers.

"An undercover British agent infiltrated the group"

This is the way these plots are stopped. Wiretapping and money tracking help but infiltration is what counts.

There are US agents doing horrible, disgusting things to maintain their positions in terrible organizations- we owe them an unpayable debt.

I guess you missed Kennedy today then? this is a prime example of a Bush failure because he is fighting the Iraq war. He is characterizing this detecting and stopping of a bomb plot as a failure in security and says we wasted resources fighting in Iraq. Only the dimwit party could come up with that.

Pelosi and several others have all been giving out with this talking point and I suppose they will try to build it into something leading up to the Nov elections!

Try this mixture: unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) fuel and inhibited red fuming nitric acid (IRFNA) oxidizer. Simply keep separated until needed. Corrosive as all get out, but for a short period of time that really does not matter.

From a different story:

Arrests made during the morning included Waheed Zaman, a biochemistry student, and Amin Asmin Tariq, a Heathrow security worker. Mr Zaman, who sat on London Metropolitan University’s Student Council as a representative of the Islamic Society, is well known in the community.

not just an airport worker, a security worker. A security worker named Amin Asmin Tariq. Now I wonder who processed his clearance?

They used a peroxide two part solution. Exactly what the other part was they haven't said. I gather there are several things that could have been used and I am sure all this is common knowledge of a lot of terrorists.
