Montana State University has been bombarded with national media queries and a few nasty e-mail messages ever since the FBI issued an alert for 11 Egyptian students who failed to show up for a cultural exchange program in Bozeman.
"It got pretty crazy" when the story broke Tuesday, MSU spokeswoman Cathy Conover said.
The news story has been listed on Internet blogs like the Drudge Report and the Web site of syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin (author of "Invasion: How America Still Welcomes Terrorists, Criminals, and Other Foreign Menaces to Our Shores" and "In Defense of Internment").
National reporters have been asking for factual information on the AWOL students, as well as her guesses about where they might be...
What triggered the media frenzy was a nationwide FBI alert, reported by the Associated Press from Washington, D.C., asking law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the 11 Egyptian students.
A total of 17 Egyptian students showed up at JFK International Airport on July 29, on their way to Bozeman.
But only six made it to Bozeman.
MSU then contacted federal authorities, and the 11 missing students' visas were revoked.
All are young men, ages 17 to 22.

And for MSU's foreign guests, Conover said, it increases their understanding of America. They get to see "how friendly, warm and hospitable" Montanans are, she said.

Perhaps MSU could send a prof to Egypt for the classes - if they can find someone stupid enough to go right now......

I remember reading a portrayal of how the Aztecs dealt with Cortez upon his arrival. They rained him with gifts of precious metal and jewels, hoping to impress him with their hospitality. He was instead impressed with the idea that he had come upon an easy mark.
Not sure how accurate that story is, but it's instructive for our times.
