Jethro Tull's soloist: Show must go on
Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull's soloist and flutist, is still planning to come to Israel. 'I dont think any of us should succumb to terror, I am afraid of coming to Israel but I am also afraid to cross the street' Sagie Ben Nun
Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull's soloist and flutist since 1967, is due to appear in Israel on October 16th, 2006 for the fifth time. Anderson will be playing in concert with the Raanana Symphony Orchestra set to take place at the city's famed amphitheatre.
As of now, it doesnt appear as though the concert is likely be cancelled.
"I am not afraid to appear in Israel, although when I come to a place like Israel, I know it's not a picnic by the Thames. I am aware of the tension and it saddens me." Anderson said.
When asked whether he is afraid to come to Israel, Anderson responded by saying that he is but he is also afraid to cross the street, and to wake up in the morning.
"We live in a frightening world," he says but doesn't believe in succumbing to terror.
"Last July, there were terror attacks in London, and people got back on the trains the next day. Terror can never win, and we can't really defeat it." Anderson added.
Tolerance and mutual respect
Anderson believes that the mindset of terrorists can't be changed by brut force, but those of the next generation can. He says it's society's and parents' duty to teach their children values, tolerance and mutual respect.
"But as long as there are parents who allow their children to sow the seeds of hate and intolerance, they are in many ways encouraging it."
Anderson's performance in Israel marks the end of the bands' European tour. He doesn't plan on bringing his valuable flute to Israel with him.
"My good flute will stay at home," he said explaining that there is always a risk of loss or damage when going on tour.

See the article for comments, etc. Like someone said there "A counter-weight to the pompous, righteous Roger Waters ". Shows something about the gentleman. I dont know what his general politics really are but he isn't cancelling.

Ian is a genuinely nice guy, especially for a FREAKIN' GENIUS, and his wife is really cool too. She once sent me a really nice bottle of wine as a "thank you" for helping her out with a messed up reservation back when I was a reservation agent for TWA.

He says it's society's and parents' duty to teach their children values, tolerance and mutual respect. Our society can teach our kids values up the wazoo, but it won't change a damn thing because their society won't.

He is enough of a gentleman to apologize when he made stupid comments. Very glad he will play in Israel.
I've always enjoyed "For Queen and Country" the best of all of their songs. I wonder how that will go over in Israel?

I dont know what his general politics really are but he isn't cancelling. My impression of Anderson has always been that he's a first-rate anti-Catholic bigot.
At least he seemed to be in the '70's. But, of course, that was a long time ago...

I have found, in traveling this world, that the US is unique in more ways than we even begin to realize. I have find it difficult to remember things like who reaches out first to shake hands in other countries. Our love of and even veneration of our flag is unlike any other place I've been in the world. It is alarming to some visitors, quaint to others and just obnoxious to still others. At the Olympics you won't see grown men from other countries cry at the raising of their flag and the playing of their national anthem (Ok maybe Israelis).
I say all that to say, I wouldn't be too harsh on foreigners who don't get us, if they "got" us they would be us.
We are unique in all the world. They are not, I don't bother getting angry, just feel sorry for them.

Ostensibly a purely practical point of view: to forge ahead with an eye toward danger, knowing it is present no matter where one goes. Now if he can get that rabbit to dance on the Lebanese border . . .
But talk about no-holds-barred musical talent! Hope the show goes well.

There is certainly hope for the man. Unfortunately, Anderson is still stuck on the mantra of "tolerance".
Note to Ian: When a culture is hell bent on your destruction, teaching your kids tolerance is not the answer!
Dittos on all of the Tull accolades. My favorites will always be Benefit and Songs from the Wood (the latter was one of my first albums)

Stand Up... This Was...
Used to see them regularly, though it's been a number of years. Ian was off his feet the last time. Didn't hurt the music, though lacked some of the theatrics. ELP was the "back up band".

He says it's society's and parents' duty to teach their children values, tolerance and mutual respect. Sounds like he's Living In The Past.
My first college roommate was a huge Tull fan so I got a non-stop dose of every 8-track Anderson had produced by that time.
Two quick Tull comments: 1) I once found his music in the "Country/Western" section of a record store. Guess they'd never actually heard his material. 2) I heard Anderson doing a radio PSA a few years ago for some Baby Boomer health condition. It dawned on me that the same folks who sold us "sex, drugs and rock & roll" in our youth are now trying to lecture us on avoiding whatever maladies their overindulgences had contributed to. I found that pathetic.

Because the Grammy's hadn't yet invented the lifetime achievement award, and the voter thought Tull deserved something. It's an award show, they're inherently stupid, and the members of Tull think it's absolutely hilarious, they didn't even watch the show.

That would be Deep Vein Thrombosis, which isn't a baby boomer condition so much as a frequent traveler condition (comes from having your legs immobile for long stretches of time), which Ian got a nasty case of on a trip to Australia and almost died (it's very frequently fatal as it stops blood from circulating through your body). Like a lot of folks who have dealt with DVT Ian had never heard of it before he got it, and after his brush some org approached him for some PSA and he said sure. Nothing pathetic about trying to help people not die, anybody who does a lot of traveling, especially by plane, for their job is at risk, some big deal Olympic figure skater almost died from it around the same time Ian had his troubles.

Great moments in lyrical history;
"I've a tenner in my skin tight jeans.
You can touch it if your hands are clean."
I have one of my iPods connected to a big amp in the trunk of my trike and while I usually have some kind of heavy metal going while I ride, *occasionally*, [like if I pull up beside somebody blasting rap at a stop light], I'll click over to some especially lilting little Tull tune and crank it full blast.
"Moths" and "Rover" seem to to be especially disturbing to the aforementioned rappers.
[or if I'm feeling really quirky that day, I'll run Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly" theme. That, and a sinister smile gets me some strange looks]....;-]

You want horror stories?....
In a fit of teenage religious zeal(extreme Pentecostal legalistic youth evangelist came to town) I burned my entire vinyl collection. The Tull was the most complete of any part of my collections, including several imports and rare pressings. One point of redemption, I did manage to destroy my mother's Sonny and Cher album. Too late, I knew I had screwed up when the "evangelist" claimed to see demonic images in the flames.....
