FCC Questions TV Stations on 'Fake News'

By Associated Press

August 15, 2006, 4:54 PM CDT

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Communications Commission has mailed letters to the owners of 77 television stations inquiring about their use of video news releases, a type of programming critics refer to as "fake news."

Video news releases are packaged news stories that usually employ actors to portray reporters who are paid by commercial or government groups.

The letters were sparked by allegations that television stations have been airing the videos as part of their news programs without telling viewers who paid for them.

FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said Tuesday the letters ask station managers for information regarding agreements between the stations and the creators of the news releases. The FCC also asked whether there was any "consideration" given to the stations in return for airing the material.

"You can't tell any more the difference between what's propaganda and what's news," Adelstein said.

I've heard it on the radio too. Stations touting the weather play old recordings of imminent tornadoe warnings, etc.

Well, stop watching the CBS Evening News then, dude.

A lot of the "reporting" by the MSM is this sort of propaganda. Look at the "Studies" they report on Medical, Environmental or Labor issues. Invariably the "Source" of the "Study" is invariable a political pressure group's propaganda given a phony "Scientific" label and reported as "news".

One of my local radio stations does it, also, but the recordings are their own. My objection is that if you live in the north and the first thing you hear on radio on a winter morning is that the snowstorm of the century is moving in, you SHOULD have the right to be told that it's OLD news. Same for hurricanes and other assorted emergencies.

Network newscasts have been such tools for any corporation or activist group for decades. They depend on this carp. Remember the Tickle-Me-Elmo craze? Or any craze for that matter.

They're just a bunch of lazy, overpaid monkeys.

*blink* *blink*

How can I get a job in the MSM?

Maybe they should label this stuff "faker news" to differentiate it from the usual day-today fake news.

.

During our 1st Cavalry Air Assaults into the Valley of Death that was South Vietnam's IA DRANG Valley of November 1965...

...major news media reporters were there to cover us.

DAN RATHER, on the other hand, holed himself up 30 miles away at the Pleiku Airstrip field hospital to ask our newly arriving wounded hero SkyTroopers what they thought of the Vietnam War now ..for WALTER CRONKITE and DON HEWITT's rolling CBS News TV cameras' benefit.

'IT SUCKS" was the answer televised back to America.

Sound a bit familiar..?

That happens here in Houston too, but you can tell the voices on the clips are the reporters, since they're still with the station.
