On September 30, 2004, Tsunemi Kubodera (National Science Museum of Japan) and Kyoichi Mori (Ogasawara Whale Watching Association) succeeded in taking history's first images of a live giant squid. Their teams had worked together for nearly two years to make the accomplishment. They used a five-ton fishing boat and only two crew members. The images were created on their third trip to a known Sperm whale hunting grounds 600 miles south of Tokyo, where they had dropped a 3,000 foot line baited with squid and shrimp. The line also held a camera and a flash. After over twenty tries that day, a 26-foot Giant squid attacked the lure and snagged its tentacle. It took the squid over four hours to break free, during which time the camera took over 500 photos. These were the first photographs ever captured of a live giant squid in its natural habitat. The squid left behind, attached to the lure, an 18-foot tentacle. Later DNA tests confirmed the animal as a Giant squid.

Thanks for the tip, R. I'm noting it now, for a trip down there in October.

The Ram's Head is on West Street in downtown Annapolis, one block from the Capitol. Great place to eat, everything is delicious. It's a very successful brewpub. It tends to be quite crowded in the evening (also has live music shows from major acts), so an early supper (4-6PM) is a good idea.

It's also withint easy walking distance of the Naval Academy.

Freeper etiquette requires the pinging of Calamari.

"....I just can't imagine eating anything with little suction cups on it...."

My favorite seafood is raw octopus. It's wonderful.

And by the way, those "suction cups" are properly called basal discs....

Good. I never eat anything with more than seven arms, however.

It reminded me of an old, old joke, whose punchline went:

A: Total control over the Jolly Green Giant!

I've tried some on a number of occassions, at different Italian restaurants (hoping that this time it would be better: It wasn't). The batter and sauce was quite good, however, what was on the inside was pretty much like eating rubberbands.

Yeah, like the 18 foot tenticle wasn't enough of a hint! I can hear the conversation: "Wow, is that a tenticle from a giant squid? How long is it?" "Hmmm... It's about 18 feet long." "Well, we need to be sure that it's not just from some 'very big squid.' Let's run a DNA test on it! Besides, it makes me feel like I'm in that CSI TV show!"
