WASHINGTON (AP) -- On a street once known as Murder Row, a teen center founded to steer youths away from drugs and crime has become an outpost in another crusade - a nationwide push by anti-abortion activists to expand their foothold in heavily black and Hispanic inner cities.
The campaign involves crisis pregnancy centers, whose counselors seek to dissuade women with unplanned pregnancies from having abortions. There are more than 2,300 centers across America, yet relatively few in inner cities where abortion rates are typically highest.
Now the two largest networks - Care Net and Heartbeat International - have launched initiatives to change that equation. Their sometimes awkward efforts rely on unlikely alliances, as an anti-abortion movement led mostly by conservative, white Republicans interacts with overwhelmingly Democratic, black communities.
"This crusade has been very difficult - having to educate community leaders as to what's really going on without being offensive, without having a political agenda," said Lillie Epps, the only black member of Care Net's senior staff and director of its Urban Initiative.

Anything we can do to protect people from the eugenics campaign of Margret Sanger's spiritual descendants (aka Planned Parenthood) will be a good thing.
*expand their foothold*? It makes it sound like some extremist group out to destroy the country from within. Only the MAM would word it like that.

*expand their foothold*?
That's Newspeak for "save lives and proclaim liberty throughout the land...."
There's a funny line you hear a lot, about "how can you preach against abortion if you don't help the women through their pregnancies and don't take care of the babies?" But that is crazy: I can't stop you from killing your kid unless I adopt the kid and raise it and put it through college?! In any case, it is a lie that pro-lifers don't care about--or don't take care of--these saved babies after they're born. Anyone who cares can find out that we do.

MAM works for me. : )
Planned Parenthood used to do an incredible amount of propaganda among Hispanics in NYC. PP was basically anti-marriage and anti-child. It was disgusting to see them publishing massive amounts of pro-abortion, anti-male material in Spanish. Actually, I thought it was odd because many of their target audience actually could not read Spanish, but I assume it was an attempt to gain "legitimacy" in the Spanish-speaking community. It was disgusting, in any case. It was aimed at destroying Hispanic families the PP had earlier helped to destroy black families.
Sounds pro-choice to me. Except that unlike the abortion mills they don't get paid it the woman chooses what they advocate.
One side of the issue claims to be "pro-life" and declares the other is "anti-life".
The other side claims to be "pro-choice" and declares the other is "anti-choice"
So which side objects to a state sponsored "choose life" license plate--why obviously the side that is a fraud.
Yet another totally unsubstantiated AP "fact".
I know I love this line
""These predatory fanatics don't lift a finger to help the children who are born unwanted and unplanned," said Jatrice Martel Gaiter, head of the Washington-area Planned Parenthood chapter."
Yes, Jatrice, but you friendly cuddly PP people would rather kill these kids instead. That's so much less predatory!
They are afraid that conservatives will recruit the future generation of kids who were NOT aborted.
"If not for conservativism, you'd have been sucked out of a tube and down a sink..."
MOOT POINT. At BEST Planned Parenthood doesn't help the children either. At WORST it is a lie because it denies that there ARE charitable aid groups that help.
Conservatives have problems with welfare state programs.
BIG lie. I know lots of people who are willing to adopt those unwanted babies and the system works against them at every turn. And for the unplanned, I've seen people give them food, clothes, and diapers. This guy needs to darken the door of a church once in a while.
