Conservatives try to curtail hotel porn

NEW YORK - Pornographic movies now seem nearly as pervasive in America's hotel rooms as tiny shampoo bottles, and the lodging industry shows little concern as conservative activists rev up a protest campaign aimed at triggering a federal crackdown.

A coalition of 13 conservative groups — including the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America — took out full-page ads in some editions of USA Today earlier this month urging the Justice Department and FBI to investigate whether some of the pay-per-view movies widely available in hotels violate federal and state obscenity laws.

The coalition also is trying to draw attention to CleanHotels.com, a directory of hotels and motels nationwide that pledge to exclude adult offerings from their in-room entertainment service.

Why are modern arms protected but not modern forms of speech and expression?

I always heard that sex was a weapon.

"Same as, "If you don't like abortion, don't have one." Hmmm."

That's a bit of a reach to say the least.

That's a very impressive stream of non sequiturs you just posted. No one is talking about what one may or may not do in a crowd. A hotel room, just as is the case with one's home, is by definition a private area. If you want to watch "Barely Legal Lolitas #28" in the privacy of your home or a hotel room, then that's your business. I'm not going to have the government force you to follow my notions of morality. If I want you to respect my right to own ugly, black guns, then I ought to respect your right to view whatever disgusting pornographic fare you choose. Here's the deal: I won't pretend to be your mom if you won't pretend to be mine.

Regardless of how I feel about the increased availability of hardcore porn on hotel pay-per-view systems, I am loathe to petition the government to increase its regulation into the content of what entertainment people can choose to purchase in their hotel rooms.

Yup.

If you don't like it, don't stay there and make it clear to corporate HQ that that's why.

As sinful and offensive as I find adultery, fornication, prostitution and homosexuality I can't imagine expending my energies on ensuring they don't occur in hotel rooms.

We have bigger fish to fry in 2006.

Though unable to cite specific cases, Burress contended that the availability of in-room porn is making hotels more dangerous.

Those extra channels make the TV heavier. Then they can fall on and kill children. THE CHILDREN!

True, a very inapt analogy. Akin to equating gambling with murder.

What makes you ashamed may not make the next person feel the same way. Also, the level of immorality or the sin you feel shame for is in direct proportion to how open your heart is to the Holy Spirit. Some folks have hardened thier hearts to the point that they don't feel shame for thier actions. You don't know your own heart and you surely can't discern the heart of another person. Only GOD knows a man's heart and therefore only HE can judge it. You are not morally better than anyone. You are as big of a sinner as Hitler in the eyes of THE LORD. The reward of sin is death and the reward of faith is life. One sin is all it takes and no man save one has lived or will ever live a sin-free life in this world. Be careful.

Spunkets is correct. Artillery pieces, naval artillery in particular, were owned by private citizens at the time the Constitution was ratified. (To borrow from Sen. Miller, what do you think those privateers with letters of marque used on the high seas? Spit wads?!)

"Check out the listings on the in-room movie service. This is not just soft-core T&A stuff anymore. Full XXX rated movies with every graphic penetration and view you can imagine are now the norm on the hotel in-room services."

And you've watched them all...just to be sure...right?

While I agree with you where adults are concerned, unfortunately young people can rent a room and watch it, and that is the biggest problem that I can see.

Yes, it makes a lot more sense for someone under 18 to get a credit card, a false ID, and then spend 50 bucks to get a room so he can then pay 10 or 20 more bucks to get a soft-core porn flick than to turn on computer and launch his Internet browser.

Just a few years ago (when most of these guys were young), porn was an "under the counter" sort of business, the sort of thing associated with dirty old men in raincoats.

Actually, back in the late 60s/early 70s there were porn sections in a lot of regular bookstores. Regular theatres would have x-rated late shows or features, and adult theatres were all over. And dirty magazines used to be out on the rack in convenience stores. It's less open now.

who seem to love porn so much that they regard the chance to view it as their most basic human and constitutional right.

Yes -- how over the top of them to support that silly "1st Amendment" thingy.

They turn out in droves whenever anyone suggests restricting it (not banning it, just restricting it) to keep it away from kids.

Last time I checked, kids can't rent hotel rooms. So if this is not "keeping it away from the kids" then this is keeping it away from....? (feel free to finish the sentence).

You are not morally better than anyone.

To many avoidance of the tempting is the same as rejecting temptation.

These are the PR stunts that make conservatives look ditsy.

Yeah, I got the feeling they do stuff like this to keep the donors happy.

That is correct, tempting someone to sin is sin itself but the problem lies in the nature of the creation. Nothing that was created will be able to purify the creation. This world is all shifting mists and fog and comparisons of morality are only on the surface because the point of view is one of corruption, always. Some have been blessed with a point of view less degraded by thier innate corruption than others, and others unfortunately are destined to be completely consumed by thier innate corruption.

With that being said, it is still noble to try and help my brother avoid sinning but if GOD gave him the free will to decide if he will hurt himself or not, who am i to deny him this GOD given freedom? Am I wiser than his Creator? NO WAY.
