The FBI says it's all part of an ongoing investigation into a group of Sri Lankans with terrorist plans. The FBI says there were no plans to attack Americans, but that the group, known as the "Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam" was targeting their home country of Sri Lanka. Officials say that terror group is responsible for assassinating a former prime minister of India.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force raided the Amherst home. Neighbors say three men were taken out in handcuffs. They say the task force also removed files, a computer and suitcases.
While it's not clear what role the three men arrested in Amherst allegedly played, the FBI says they've been watching the entire group, the Tamil Tigers, for years. The FBI's Leslie Wiser Jr. says the group was trying to purchase ten shoulder-fired surface to air missiles that can be used to bring down airplanes, and at least 500 A-K 47 assault weapons. According to Wiser, the terror group also asked for other sophisticated devises used in military operations.
Again, the FBI emphasizes there's no indication the weapons were to be used on U-S soil and it's still not clear what role the three men arrested in Amherst allegedly played.
The Tamil Tigers are radical Marxists (as I am sure you know). Their goals are exactly the same as those of Muslims, that is, world domination, which is why the IRA, ETA and most other Marxist terrorists have trained at Muslim facilities in the ME. BTW (as you also probably know, but are just too coy to state), many famous Marxist terrorists - ranging from Carlos the Jackal to the head of ETA in Mexico - have converted to Islam. It projects their desire for world domination and gives them the only thing they were lacking under Marx, which was a cultic form that took in this world and the next. Osama bin Marx? Karl bin Laden?
The Tamil Tigers are financed by their diaspora population. Those who succeed in leaving the island for better lands form cells, raise money and recruits. It is not difficult to envision a cell actively acquiring weapons overseas for delivery to their home. Amherst would be a safer base than New York City.
I was also thinking that Amherst is close to the border.

Cumberland, MD paper today reports the search and seizure of e-mail and other records possibly impicating a doctor from Sri Lanka in illegal funds transmittal. Could be a happy ending in this one. Wealthy doctor goes to jail for supporting terrorists. Who would imagine a person who presumably has taken the Hippocratic oath, and pledged allegiance to maximum profit at minimum effort, would do something that would screw up the system upon which he thrives. Skin him slowly!

I can't speak for any US/Canadian border crossings other than Peace Arch, Blaine, Anacortes ferry and Port Angeles ferry, but I have noticed that the mainland Southbound crossings have seemed far more perfunctory than the sea crossings. Northbound is quite another story.
After a 20-45 minute wait, the US Customs officials were polite, succinct in their questions, and efficient on the land crossings, even with my rather long hair.
Seaborne crossings, however, are quite another story. EVERY time I have gotten on a boat to the US, I've been among the first off the boat, but the VERY LAST to leave the Customs area, due to my triggering some unknown "search this dude" tripwire. 3 years ago, no less than 8 agents were interested in a bottle of (US packaged and manufactured) "Miracle Lube". It was all I could do not to laugh as they sprayed each other. My latest trip ( last month) the agent held me back so he could sniff the air in the tires!
Porous is NOT the word I would use to describe our mutual border. Misguided and inane is how I would describe how its integrity is being 'guarded', though.
I'll grant that the Port Angeles post is doing a damn good job (they did catch Ahmed Ressam!), but the 'thrill' of getting searched is turning into a PITP!

I was thinking that the Buffalo area has two Great Lakes that are handy for smuggling by boat and many bridges for access.
I think Chesapeake Bay may have a longer coastline and more useful inlets and rivers than Lake Erie and Ontario combined - and far better weather in the winter. The area is also accessible to more convenient air and water ports and major population centers.
