Allen gives longer apology for remark

SPRINGFIELD -- Shaken by charges of racial insensitivity, U.S. Sen. George Allen offered his most expansive public apology Tuesday for comments made to an Indian-American man. "I deeply regret those comments," Allen, R-Va., said Tuesday just before leaving the podium at a Northern Virginia retirement community. "I have no one to blame but myself. A person was insulted and others were. I'm fully responsible for it. ... I want to live up to all your expectations. I'm very sorry and I apologize."

I do find it odd that some Reps are jumping on the bandwagon attacking Allen.

Probably because they're not Republicans to begin with.

Hence the old joke -- you wanna see a monkey? Go look in the mirror, you'll see a monkey.

Since Allen did not say that exact word, it's not an insult.

Roughly translated, Allen (his staff invented the word) called the guy "Mr. Mohawk" after his hairdo.

I find it absolutely unbelievable how so many Freepers have not only forgotten their Scot roots, they cannot comprehend the simplest of expressions.

A man with oversize brogalises on might be referred to as "McBrooks", or "McPants" ~ you people do know what brogalis means, right?

He needs to stop apologizing. Every time the issue comes up, it's another excuse for the fools in the media to report.

Newt is even less electable than Allen. He has a closet full of skeletons that would place him constantly on the defensive in a Presidential campaign. Plus, only Hillary, among the most prominent hopefuls, would get a lower percentage of women's votes. He strikes many sensible, conservative women (like mrs riverdawg) as a creep.

He's not perfect and he was railroaded. Like the myth that he divorced his wife on her deathbed.

Newt is brilliant and he's not a defensive guy. It's Allen or Newt vs Hillary or Warner. While Hillary is hated, their kook base likes her more than Warner, so she may be in. If that's true, the Republican is already in. If it's Warner, it's a tougher race but the guy is an empty suit and Newt would do better against him. There are too many major issues and personalities here for a certain group who feels "uncomfortable" about a candidate to make a difference in '08 IMHO.

I said in my post he should say "I thought I was using a word which meant clown. I am not a racist and it is amazing how this story has gotten blown out of proportion. As for the guy stalking me tho..."
After that ignore it.

And he should say that issue is over, next question. They would learn to not waste their question on it quick enough

You don't get it. The issue is not over as far as the MSM and the Webb campaign are concerned. They want Allen's reaction every time the question is asked. He is damned no matter what he says. If he dismisses the question, then he is portrayed as being insensitive and unapologetic. The angrier he gets every time the question is asked the better. If he reiterates his apology, then the substance of the issue is kept front and center and Allen admits his guilt. Allen can't win. His best bet is to make himself the victim.

As someone else posted, this is very similar to the way the MSM handled Bush's National Guard Service.

The problem is that the Allen campaign has already given several versions of how it happened. Was it in reference to the guy's Mohawk haircut? Or a word from Allen's Tunisian-born mother that he picked up in childhood? The more you try to explain it, the more questions arise. It is hard to unring a bell.

I can not think of any Republican remark as vicious and demeaning as that B*tch dog Hitlery Rodamn calling a Son of Yudah a "Fu&king Jew Bastard". When do the dumbos start responding to their hate-filled speech? Jessie Jackass continues to be the darling of liberal socialist as well all these years. If Hitlery runs I may have a bumper sticker made up with her callous remark printed on it.

I think he did all of us a favor by outing hisself as an idiot for saying that in front of a rolling camera. If he had the nomination locked up and THEN did it, it would have been much worse.

I know -- it has gotten ridiculous. Somehow change the dang subject. The more he talks about it the bigger it gets no matter what he says. That's why I think he blew it from the start by acting all sorry about something that really was not a big deal. He is playing right into the hands of his opponent(s).

It is part of gotcha politics and the MSM's double standard. One verbal slip up for a Rep is the kiss of death. For a Dem, it is nothing because only the Reps are bigots. The sad part is that the Reps eat their own. Look at the reaction to Trent Lott's harmless remark at a birthday party. He was kicked out of his leadership position. We are our own worst enemy.

It is part of gotcha politics and the MSM's double standard,.

For some reason, my wife has NPR on the alarm clock. She goes through phases, where sometimes it's the sports station, sometimes music, sometimes KFBK. This morning, I heard a story where a media person was being hailed by some other media people for her brilliant work in creating a huge political commercial for some congressman by calling it a reality TV show. The congressman is a dem, and she uses the term "we" in describing her political affiliation with the democrats. They laugh, oh how amusing, but she's still brilliant, and it's ok because this congressman says some things which could be construed as questioning democrat party politics. I don't know where this show is going to be, if it's PBS or some network, but it is enough to make me gag.

That what I was trying to point out...So why even apologize to them?

Compare the Lott remarks to A KKK Grand Kleagle holding a Dem Senate seat for 50 years....He should have said "I'll apologize when Byrd resigns". Instead we get milquetoasting.

No doubt Webb appeals to your primary political instincts.

Nope.

Got no use for him, either.

I don't see Biden apologizing, so Allen should stop grabbing his ankles for the thought police.

This was a plan by the Dems to catch Allen in a racial slur and it worked because Allen didn't think before he spoke. Although we're not sure if it really is a slur. Allen just stepped right in the Caca laid out in his path. But he should let it go. He should forget it and then the MSM will eventually have to forget it.
