Global warming boost to glaciers
BBC News ^

"Researchers at Newcastle University looked at temperature trends in the western Himalaya over the past century.

They found warmer winters and cooler summers, combined with more snow and rainfall, could be causing some mountain glaciers to increase in size."

Let's see, by this logic, if I want more ice cubes, I should open the door to the freezer. I thought we've been told that glaciers were shrinking due to global warming. Now it seems they're growing due to global warming. That global warming is an amazing thing. It seems that whatever the weather happens to be doing at the moment, global warming caused it.

They found warmer winters and cooler summers,

And apparently global warming also causes cooler summers. We should all be applauding global warming. Warmer winters , less energy used to heat homes and cooler summers, less energy used to cool homes.

This global warming thing is a win win all the way around.

Milder temperatures and less energy usage.

Dammit, and I have been faithfully using aerosol deodorants and driving Hummers for the specific purpose of getting rid of those pesky glaciers.

Unless you have one of those thingies that dispenses the ice through the door.

What causes the glaciers to grow is more snowfall on them. More precipitation is thought to follow from warmer ocean surface, an oversmplification.

But is is true that an ice age is not the same as a cold age.

Maybe it is different in the Himalaya but our European glaciers (I am from Germany close to the Alps and NO Kyoto-lobbyist) are unquestionably melting away.

Counter-logically then, if global cooling ever makes a return visit, we'll all have beach weather around the whole planet.

Global Cooling is bad, and Global Warming is bad. I guess the Kyoto types long for the days when the weather ran like clockwork, when summers were hot but not too hot, winters cold but not too cold. When was this idyllic time, exactly?

The edges melt and the glacier retreats but increased snow fall makes them thicker at their source. The same thing is happening in Greenland. The glaciers are retreating and the enviros are screaming but measurements from satellite show a net increase in the amount of ice.

The time to which you refer was Camelot - the Kennedy presidency.

I've found that this year the weather has been increasingly often more intensely good than before. Perhaps this trend should be avoided through some type of government action?

Global warming is just like "heads, I win, tails, you lose".
Just remember that GW is the new cash cow for universities, politicians, and our old pals, the lawyers. We are all in big trouble.

You're right, we need to pump lots of federal money into a giant orbital umbrella, and a project to cover the moon with mirrors.

But, then again, your European glaciers have been melting away since the mid to late 1800's, when the Little Ice Age ended..
Sometimes they melted slower, sometimes faster, but overall, they have been melting away..

Don't we worry about warming - Russian Academy of Science apparently warns of global cooling: http://www.mosnews.com/news/2006/08/25/globalcooling.shtml:

"... period of global cooling similar to one seen in the late 17th century — when canals froze in the Netherlands and people had to leave their dwellings in Greenland — could start in 2012-2015 and reach its peak in 2055-2060.

He said he believed the future climate change would have very serious consequences and that authorities should start preparing for them today because “climate cooling is connected with changing temperatures, especially for northern countries.”

“The Kyoto initiatives to save the planet from the greenhouse effect should be put off until better times,” he said, referring to an international treaty on climate change targeting greenhouse gas emissions..."

Don't fret. This is DOUBLE bad news. Global warming which causes glaciers to melt would make the oceans rise and flood out major cities like NY. But the global warming that causes them to GROW, well, thats double bad, because ocean levels will DROP, and leave NY without any water at all, and all the garbage barges will be stuck in the muck.

Woah is me, Woah is me. What shall I do? How much MORE money shall I send to combat this kind of global warming? Did the money I sent for the other kind of global warming get used too much, and cause this kind of Glonal warming? How does sending money to UN anti global warming NGO's stop global warming anyways? /s

"Maybe it is different in the Himalaya but our European glaciers (I am from Germany close to the Alps and NO Kyoto-lobbyist) are unquestionably melting away."

That happens in the summer. Wait a month or two. I guarantee that they will have more fresh snow on them, and they will be shooting mortars to reduce avalanches before you know it. Seriously, dryer years means less seasonal snowfall, which is not enough to replace the normal melt off during the summer. It's just the normal cycle of weather.

But because the younger generations have never seen droughts, and believe the LIES of enviro wienies showing pics of melting glaciers compared to years where there was above average snowfall, They believe that man causes global warming, and not variations in weather, fluctuations in the amounts of moisture in the stratosphere, variations of energy output from the sun, Volcanic activity, cooling and warming of world sea's and oceans. Still, and regardless of that argument, global warming, (a whole whopping 1or 2 degrees or so) will have a net benefit for mankind, animals and plants. Don't forget, even if there was a 10 degree change in average earth temperatures, something that won't happen for a thousand years, it will still be damn cold at the north pole, -55f instead of -65f. The pack ice will not melt. Polar bears will just jump on and off the ice further north, instead of jumping off at Churchill Manitoba and eating the townsfolks and their chained up dogs.

But enviro wienies will complain about that too, because then they will have to pay more for the tundra buggie driver to drive further so they can see cute little polar bears, pee in the snow, and leave their garbage behind.
