Cardin's lead over Mfume up in poll (MD- Steele polling well)

Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin has increased his lead in the contest for the Democratic nomination in Maryland's U.S. Senate race and likely Republican nominee Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele remains highly competitive in any general election matchup, a poll released today shows.

Likely voters in the Sept. 12 Democratic primary now favor Mr. Cardin over ex-Rep. Kweisi Mfume, a former National Association for the Advancement of Colored People president, by 43 percent to 30 percent, according to a statewide poll by nonpartisan Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies.

In the general election, the poll found Mr. Steele trailing Mr. Cardin 44 percent to 39 percent and beating Mr. Mfume 42 percent to 38 percent.

There is good news and bad news here. The bad is that Cardin will probably win the Democratic primary, and he'll be tougher to beat in the general. The good news is that Steele is very very competitive with Cardin and this is a definite pick-up opportunity. Dems have to be very worried that a Senate seat in this blue state is in serious jeopardy for them.

Cardin will be tough in the general election.

He is a very unusual person and not to be trusted.

Cardin will be tough in the general election.

He is a very unusual person and not to be trusted.

But he said he'd cure cancer if elected.

He'd say he'd repeal the law of gravity if elected. I wouldn't trust Mr. Cardin with a 3-munite egg.

The other angle here is that blacks favor Mfume over Cardin by a 68-19 margin. If Mfume loses, how disappointed will the average black voter be, and how motiviated will they be to come out and back Cardin in the general election? If a Cardin primary win depresses black turnout in November, that's a plus for Steele.

"I live in Maryland and I'm not for sure who I would vote for be it Steele or Cardin" - Are you looking for direction?

Troll alert.

This fellow is reminiscent of MD4Bush with his rumor-mongering about a prominent Maryland Democrat.

Dear BlackRazor,

I'm sure that the Dems will try to come up with some well-paid sinecure for Mr. Mfume after he is defeated by Mr. Cardin. That, and a chauffeured private car, will likely make an enthusiastic Cardin supporter out of Mr. Mfume.
