Harris holds lead heading into final week

U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris holds a double-digit lead over her three opponents in the Republican race for the U.S. Senate nomination in Florida's Sept. 5 primary election, a new poll released Thursday showed.

Harris, who is serving her second term in Congress from a district representing the Sarasota area, was favored by 38 percent of 317 likely Republican voters in a random telephone survey taken between Aug. 23-28 by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. The survey reported a margin of error of plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

William McBride, a 34-year-old Windermere attorney, was supported by 22 percent, while retired Navy admiral LeRoy Collins Jr., of Tampa was backed by 11 percent and Peter Monroe, a real estate developer from Safety Harbor, received 3 percent.

The winner of the GOP primary will face incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Melbourne, in the Nov. 7 general election.

A fourth of the likely Republican voters questioned said they were still undecided and nearly a half, 45 percent, said they might change their minds by election day - including a third of those who said they presently favored Harris.

"If Rep. Harris had only one opponent she might be in deep trouble," said Peter Brown, assistant polling director for Quinnipiac. "But having three candidates splitting the anti-Harris vote is a major plus for her."

Harris was rated favorably by 36 percent while 25 percent viewed her unfavorably and another 22 percent said they had mixed opinions about the former Florida secretary of state, who gained notoriety for her role in the 2000 presidential election recount.

Her opponents are so poorly known by most voters that none were rated favorably by more than 18 percent of the respondents.

Harris has HIGH name recognition, but most people know her and dislike her.

LOL! Which is why she is going to walk away in the Primary from every other GOP candidate.
Because most of the GOP voters dislike her.

John, you've become a kook. - Get a job in the media.

bill1952: "Because most of the GOP voters dislike her.

Aw, billy, can't find anything more than fabricated ad hominems?

[GOP VOTERS:] Harris was rated favorably by 36 percent while 25 percent viewed her unfavorably and another 22 percent said they had mixed opinions

Harris is only liked by 36% of REPUBLICANS. Indies and Democrats are very anti-Harris, as many "liberal polls" the ostrich club ignores have demonstrated.

How does that sand taste, LOL

McBride isn't hypothetical. He's real. Three-quarters of the Republicans in the state have never heard of him. It doesn't matter how well-known he might be in theory. In practice, he is not well known. You were talking through your hat. You got caught. Please, move on to the next talking point.

Nobody that I asked in the South Florida has never ever heard about McBride except for the lib guy who ran against Jeb Bush!!!

Hmmmm???

I question the seriousness of any candidate who waits until the last minute to file paperwork; and only after an exhaustive search/begging campaign by certain powerbrokers.

"The" South Florida? Who did you ask? Political insiders? Bartenders? Hookers?

Sounds like those journalists who couldn't believe Reagan got elected because no one they knew voted for him!

You are the one dumping propaganda around here as if you are being paid to do it. Do you intend to continue this charade Wednesday September 6?

In this race, you can question the seriousness of all of the candidates.

Have you ever heard of our "Reclaiming America for Christ," an organization I "belong" to, or Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, a ten thousand member church here in South Florida with an outreach all over the country and many other countries as well? Including it's "Center for Christian Statesmanship in D.C.???

I've been making this assertion all along. These clowns challenging Harris aren't serious about serving in the Senate. Their job is to be a nuisance to Harris, period.

"Who are most people...People in her district or who"

She's not running just in her district any more. Had she run again for her House seat, she'd probably have won. Now, however, she is running in the whole state. Had you forgotten that?

FL is home to some of the world's biggest and most influential Christian organizations, which will certainly be making sure their constituents know the facts about the candidates to GOTV for Harris. FR is not the only influence online or off by any means.

Cooties notwithstanding. ;^)
