Juice could help stave off Alzheimer's: study

Drinking fruit or vegetable juice several times a week could help protect against Alzheimer's disease, according to a study in the September issue of The American Journal of Medicine.

The nine-year study involving nearly 2,000 people, led by Professor Qi Dai of Tennessee's Vanderbilt University, showed that the risk of developing Alzheimer's - a degenerative brain disease that affects a person's memory, thinking and mood - was cut by 76 percent among those who drank fruit or vegetable juice more than three times a week.

Among those who drank juice once a week, the risk was reduced by 16 percent.

The study focused on 1,836 dementia-free people in Seattle, Washington beginning in 1991. They were tracked by questionnaires on their lifestyle and eating habits, as well as by cognitive function tests that were conducted every two years.

Although the scientific community had long thought that antioxidant vitamins like vitamins C and E or carotene had protective benefits against Alzheimer's, the study confirmed their belief that "there was maybe something else," Dai said, pointing to polyphenols, natural antioxidants found in juice, tea and wine.

"Animal studies and cell culture studies confirmed that some polyphenols from juices showed a stronger neuroprotective effect than antioxidant vitamins. So we are now looking at polyphenols," Dai said.

The study did not indicate whether some types of juice were more beneficial than others.

The study was part of a larger research project examining Alzheimer's disease in Japan, Hawaii and Seattle.

The illness affects some 4.5 million Americans and nearly 5.4 million people in Western Europe.

A daily dose of chocolate, wine, other healthy foods could add years to your life....

Here's a new recipe for heart disease prevention: Grab a handful of dark chocolate, a couple of almonds, some fruits and vegetables, and a sprinkle of garlic. Wash it all down with a glass of wine. Do this every day, and researchers say you'll cut your risk of heart disease by a whopping 76%.

The diet, dubbed the "Polymeal," is a combination of foods that have been individually shown to reduce one's risk of heart disease.

No chocolatini? [/pout] Okay, can I smash the garlic on my veggies, eat the fruit and nuts together, then have the chocolate with wine? Lucky me, I prefer dark chocolate!

Nothing, but a higher concentration of certain things.. after all...got to squeeze a good number of oranges to get a glass of orange juice... usually far more than someone would eat in a sitting.

Coincidental or causal?

Illegal immigration and ozone depletion has increased during the same period of testing.

Therefore, we can conclude that this drop in Alzheimers is another unexpected side-effect of not having a border wall to protect us from global warming.

They already have... at least in preliminary tests.

Have developed chemicals that cross the blood brain barrier and remove the plaque buildup that is responsible for alzheimers.. at least in lab animals.

Very very promising that this will lead to treatment in humans.

Yeah, and having a monkey groom me could help protect against shingles.

This sentence is meaningless, and it leads me not to want to read the article on grounds that it might be as meaningless and I will have wasted valuable minutes of my life which I will then want back.

Chocolate Martini

There may be easier ones out there, this is the first one I found. I've never had one, I don't care for sweet drinks, but my friend loves those.

Thankee kindly, Dancer! I should have asked before your tbl, since I don't care for sweet drinks much, either. Occasional Amaretto Sour or Pina Colada, but very rarely. The carbs simply aren't worth it. I'm more likely to go for a margarita on the rocks with extra lime.

I'm a beer (Guinness if I can, if not Mic Ultra, carb thing) and wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir) person with the occasional dirty martini if I'm out and about. I rarely drink those though, I can't drink liquor like I could 20 years ago so I don't even try.

I'm a beer fan, too, and tried Beck's Light recently. Very good and I bet you'd like it since you like Guinness. European flavor. I'll try Cabernet. At a wine tasting there was a red that was so lovely. Can't find it, so I get Shiraz or Merlot. I do like a really good dry vodka martini or just vodka and soda.

Do Bloody Mary's count?

Why not? I count onion rings and french fries as vegetables in my diet... probably explains that 230 cholesterol I have.

Thanks for the post.
I heard of "Polymeal" a while back but never tracked it down.

Hope I'm not started on Alzheimers!
