US unprepared for nuclear terrorist threat, report says
Monsters and Critics ^ | Sept. 1, 2006 | DPA

Five years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the US government remains unprepared for a nuclear terrorist threat, a nuclear nonproliferation group alleges in a report released Thursday.

Physicians for Social Responsibility, an advocacy and policy group that focuses on stopping nuclear proliferation and protecting the environment, said that as many as 52,000 people could die in a nuclear bomb set off on a ship in the port of new York.

Another 238,000 people would be exposed to direct radiation.

The group analyzed three possible scenarios, the nuclear bomb explosion in the New York City port, a dirty bomb explosion in Washington and an attack on a nuclear power plant in Chicago.

In the Chicago scenario, an attack on a nuclear plant, 7.5 million people could be exposed to radiation and 20,000 could receive a lethal dose.

"Is "Physicians for Social Responsibility" a Hillary or Soros group?"

Neither. They're one of the original Communist "anti-nuclear" front groups.

Do you mean CTU is not up and running and that every city doesn't really have a Jack Bauer ready and able to step in and save us?

A concerted program of civil defense and personal preparedness would go a long way. Homeland Security and FEMA should ideally be working on evacuation plans, mitigation, and recovery operations.

Responsible businesses and corporations should make prudent disaster recovery plans.

Individuals and families have an obligation to keep some emergency food, water, and necessities on hand. We also need to take responsibility to help ourselves and our neighbors.

Part of the whole Katrina disaster was the result of large numbers of people who had long ago surrendered their individual sovereignty to the state for the price of a AFDC check. Their response in a crisis was to wait for the nanny-state to take care of them and resort to criminality, looting, etc.

If you go do a political campaign donation search on the spokesman in the article, Ira Helfland it reads like a Left Wing donation list.

This long standing disarmament supporter is doing a CYA move here with this inititive now calling for civil defense. They and others like them are responsible for much of the derision directed at minimizing civil defense over the last 40 years.

The problem and the cure were posted at FR a week before their recent media grabbing 'revelations' at "The Good News About Nuclear Destruction" here...

"Is "Physicians for Social Responsibility" a Hillary or Soros group?"

They do rate a page over at "Discover The Network" (David Horowitz/
Frontpage Mag)...but no mention of Soros. In fact, they even oppossed
Bubba's move for limited nuclear weapon testing:

It is a rather difficult thing to prepare for.

Americans used to be more prepared -- back in the 1950's. Some of us still are.

Fallout shelters; stocks of weeks worth of food, fuel, water (or adequate water filters) and other supplies; radiation detectors; potassium iodide tablets; guns & ammo; and other preparations which are cheap if done ahead of time.

Most of us will not be at ground zero (which we can't prepare for) but, instead, may be in a fallout zone or at least in an area affected by massive disruptions of utilities and other infrastructure services -- which we can prepare for.
