German bomb plot intended for World Cup: paper

BERLIN (Reuters) - Two failed attempts to bomb trains in western Germany in July had originally been planned for the football World Cup, a newspaper reported on Friday.
The Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung cited security sources as saying interrogation of the suspects had established that the would-be bombers had abandoned the original plan as they had considered the implications of such an attack.
One of the bombs was found in July on a train in Dortmund, which hosted some of June and July's World Cup matches. The other was found on a train in Koblenz.
Extracts of the article, released in advance of Saturday's publication, also said the suspects belonged to a "new generation of terrorists" who worked together in cells for a short time.
German police have said the bombs, crude devices made of propane gas, could have killed many people had they gone off.
A series of arrests have been made in Germany and Lebanon but Focus magazine reported in its online edition that two men being held in Beirut would not be delivered to Germany.
"They are Lebanese citizens, they must be tried here and be punished here," Focus quoted Lebanese Attorney General Said Mirza as saying.
Lebanese authorities have said the suspects may be linked to al Qaeda.

It was on every freaking television in New York City for weeks. At the pubs. At the delis. At the bodegas. At work. It was probably on at times square, but I never go there.
I suppose if I had been trapped in a subway tunnel for a month, there's a slim chance I might have been spared watching any of it.

I'm having real trouble following your logic here, but I surmise that the only rip you give about "that event" is that your son was there. I trust if he hadn't been, you wouldn't be putting verbal chips on your shoulder.
I am, I confess, guilty of ignorance. I am devoid of a single clue about the meaning, challenge, virtue, or purpose of soccer, that I see in so many American sports.
A friend once described soccer as a highly evolved game that third world kids used to play with goat heads in open spaces.
It's been dressed up a lot, but it's really the same game. Pointless.

What is interesting here...is that they didn't do it during the world cup. Plans may have existed...but they never did it then.
After been there in Kaiserslautern for two games and walked the streets before and after the game...there were tons of police and security people...all very obvious. You could not have walked more than 50 feet and seen a cop standing there. I suspect that the Jihad boys looked at the security and got scared.
As for the effort in placing in the train station...any German would have told you that cameras are in every main station in Germany...and they have people actually watching the station. Same story for airports. Same story for major business districts. These guys aren't very bright...but then they are Muslims...so I shouldn't expect alot of intelligence.
As for other Jihad boys out there in Germany...yep, probably a 1,000 of them just waiting to be plucked and given a tasking by their local Saudi-trained Mullah. One of these days....someone will ask what ties Rich Reid (the tennis shoe bomber), the 19 guys on 9-11, the 24 guys arrested in London last month, the four bombers of London in July 2005, and all the others....and grasp that they had Saudi-trained Mullahs in their local mosque. Only then will you grasp the real solution to the problem (which isn't 200,000 GI's in Iraq or Afghanistan).
