New Jersey Republican Tom Kean Jr. called for the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Sunday, days after a new poll showed the Iraq war was hampering his U.S. Senate bid. Kean joins a growing chorus of federal lawmakers, mostly Democrats, in calling for a change in leadership at the Pentagon. Senate Democrats could force a no-confidence vote on Rumsfeld this week.
"Donald Rumsfeld has to go," Kean said Sunday, between campaign stops at the Jersey Shore. "This is something I've been thinking about for months." Kean said he has become increasingly frustrated over the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war. He said he recently lost faith that new military leadership dispatched to Iraq in June would lead to changes. "It has become clear to me in recent days that what is needed is a change of direction, policy and attitude at the highest levels of our defense establishment in Washington," Kean said.
The son of Republican former Gov. Tom Kean Sr. is locked in a tight race for U.S. Senate. His opponent, Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, holds the seat after being chosen by Gov. Jon S. Corzine to fill it until November. Menendez on Friday called on Rumsfeld to resign and urged his opponent to do the same.
"I have previously called for Secretary Rumsfeld to resign for his gross mismanagement of the war in Iraq," Menendez said Friday. "His statements this week criticizing the majority of Americans who now disapprove of the war were unpatriotic and beyond acceptable." Kean also referenced Rumsfeld's recent remarks to veterans, saying the Defense secretary stepped over the line when he likened critics of the Bush administration's war policies to those who advocated appeasing Nazism in the 1930s.

Sellout!!!
Kean we never knew you.
If they wanted you to mirror Menendez's comments, they will just elect him instead of you.
What a dickhead.
I actually think this is a political ploy by Kean to woo independent and democratic voters in NJ. I like Rummy and think he should stay, yet for Kean, it is probably a smart political move.
One less RINO we don't need!
i am starting to give less then a sh-t about the congessional houses because of idiots like this
Like father, like son ... is he taking advice from the Jersey Girls too?
I hate having to vote for this guy.
I know.
The problem with New Jersey (and pretty much the entire NorthEast) is that we won't be getting very many conservatives from the area, at least not in statewide elections, like what they have for Senator.
I think you're 100% right, but he's absolutely wrong if these views are honestly held. And if they aren't honestly held, he's wrong anyway.
There is that stupid vote of no confidence thing again. These fools really need to take a few minutes and read the Constitution of the United States again or in this case for the first time.
Kean is like his old man pretty much a moderate middle of the road mush who wants to be a Senator for resume sake and little more. His winning helps the GOP but not the country. He sounds like yet another empty suit at a time when giants are badly needed.
Sorry my man, we have to care.
But it's sad that he's either doing this honestly or as a political ploy.
Interesting. Kean was leading in the polls....this kind of whimpiness...will it hurt him or help him up there?
yeah that he does
well if he draws off 3-4% of the indy's in the state, I'm guessing he will take it as a success....
To think, NJ was actually one of the Republicans' better states in the 1980s, at least for the presidential vote.
Is the dickhead you are referring to Kean or the author of this hit piece?
Since when did we become a Euro-wennie style democracy with "no-confidence" votes? If they can get rid of Rummy with a no-confidence vote and 45 D's, what is to prevent the 55 R's to do the same thing to Ginsberg and Beyer, just for starters?
Yeah, I know-- a two word reply-- missing testicles.
