Don't Try This at Home [Incredible Photo of Helo Rescue in Afghanistan]
Neptunus Lex ^ | 8/5/2006

(Caption written by Neptunus Lex):

This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission. The pilot is a PA Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the (back) end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack on a steep mountain cliff and hold it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear???

I don't see any wounded. I saw this picture a couple of years ago. I believe the gentlemen being loaded on board are likely to currently be "guests" at Club GitMo. :)

Super picture!

We used to do something similar to that on rocking and rolling ships while underway.

We (USA) have the best Pilots in the World.

Just think. If it wasn't for the poverty draft, that pilot would be just another unemployed loser from the inner city.

Would they try such a risky maneuver to load Taliban prisoners? Why not find a safer place to load them?

screw the roof..... look at the trees in the foreground...that's what'll knock a heli down if it catches a blade...

Big Brass ones...that's what the feller should get as recognition for helping those wounded men....wow!

CH-47

Indeed, the external engine pods are the best giveaway. CH-46, Sea Knight, is somewhat smaller than the Chinook as well.

Maybe 'cuz getting to the "safer place" is a lot more dangerous for the groundpounders than flying right out of there.

Just about every Army/Marine Chopper pilot.

While the picture is dramatic, the execution is routine.

Our guys and gals are trained well, ant that particular manoever is not that difficult.
