House Leader Boehner Refuses to Rule Out Immigration Deal With Senate [Rep.Hayworth No To Shamnesty]
Human Events ^ | Sept. 11, 2006 | Amanda B. Carpenter

Posted on 09/11/2006 8:46:31 AM PDT by conservativecorner

House Majority Leader John Boehner (Ohio) last week would not rule out passing a comprehensive immigration bill before Congress recesses for the mid-term elections.

When a reporter asked him if it was realistic to assume Congress would not pass such a bill in the limited time left on the legislative calendar, he replied, “That is not fair.”

Boehner said that “conversations about the overall bill, the larger bill, are going to continue,” but suggested alternative methods to secure the border were being planned.

“You will see us, I think, again this month, move to include additional money for fencing on the border, more money for agents on the border and more money for surveillance on the border,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (Tenn.) echoed Boehner’s remarks. Frist said, “Through the Defense appropriation bill and the Homeland Security appropriation bill, we will put heavy resources on making our borders secure. We need to aggressively, through legislation and through appropriations, secure our borders,”

Over the August recess, the Congressional Budget Office quietly released a report that estimated the total cost to taxpayers of the immigration bill that passed the Senate would be $127 billion over the next decade.

When I asked if that was an acceptable cost, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) said, “One of the alternative proposals of our colleagues on the Republican side is to put 11 million people in jail.Who wants to pay for that? What does that get? I don’t know specifically how they allocated the costs or their priorities of the bill that may or may not be judged as a good investment, but let me say that the alternative is far more costly.”

Enforcement Alone

Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R.-Ariz.) said passing a bill could be possible if it focused on enforcement alone. “No if, ands or buts” he said, “and certainly no add-ons from the comprehensive camp.”

Rep. Steve King (R.-Iowa) said he would welcome appropriations funding for border security but that he’d rather see stand-alone legislation. “Mr. Pence is not going to get his Ellis Island kiosks this year,” he said, referring to the immigration plan being pushed by Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.) that mandates immigrants visit foreign “Ellis Island Centers” to apply for citizenship.“So why don’t we do what we all agree needs to be done and let’s be done,” said King.“That is to shut off the four million people a year pouring across our Southern border and then take up the debate in January.”

If by November 8 the Southern border is not secured, King advised voters to “look at the voting records of the candidates on the ballot. If they support House enforcement then stand with them because they are for controlling our borders. If they voted against it, brand them with the scarlet letter ‘A’ for amnesty and vote accordingly.”

“Mr. Pence is not going to get his Ellis Island kiosks this year,”....LOL...kiosks

needs repeating, again and again....

the guy without a lot of money or a really high paying occupation as a lawyer or doctor.

That's why I remind people of Joe Schwarz. He had big time backing from John McCain, the president and GOP leadership. He also had the money but in the end it didn't matter because the people removed him anyway and replaced him with a conservative who's biggest backing was the Minuteman PAC.

The cheap help is only cheap to the people who employ them; not the customer. If anything, prices go up everytime you turn around.

Michigan is a good example of how RINOs can create a blue state.

As I watched the first installment of ABC's 9-11 last night, a question was asked regarding George Tenet and cowardice. I think that question still applies. Is anyone in D.C. not a coward?

The illegals are the second issue and it is a crime that so many of those that post hereare so hung up on the illegals that they will stay home thus allowing the Rats to win. Of course, when that happens, both the terrorists and the illegals win and, for sure, we will all loss.

How can the congress say they are dealing with the WOT when an estimated 4 million illegals are crossing the southern border each year and we have between 11 and 30 million unknown illegal aliens in this country? The two issues are intricately intertwined. Fighting terrorists overseas while ignoring the potential terrorist threats here is completely incompetent. (And the terrorist threats with illegal immigration is only one tiny part of the illegal immigration issue. The GOP made their choice on this issue - blame them if they lose. Put the responsibility on the right shoulders.)

It is not a crime, yet anyway, to not vote for a politician. Unless you know something I don't. LOL BTW, the border is a part of national security not a separate issue. Quit trying to separate the two. That is no different then the Dems trying to separate Iraq from the WOT. They are all included in the same package.

Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R.-Ariz.) said passing a bill could be possible if it focused on enforcement alone. “No if, ands or buts” he said, “and certainly no add-ons from the comprehensive camp.”

I love J.D.

Rep. Love the slap to Pence.

That is to shut off the four million people a year pouring across our Southern border and then take up the debate in January.”

Debate, maybe, Amnesty? I'd recommend not.

I guess you would say Congressman King has committed a crime, here, huh?

I'm glad he and I are on the same page. Re-elect the majority which are border enforcement Republicans. If you are one of those with someone who is not, unfortunately I'm in that number, it's up to you. I'm not voting for my amnesty lovin' Congressman that's for sure. Though I AM helping elect Republicans that stand for border enforcement ELSEWHERE in the nation.

Oh, and Boehner has never been the deal breaker in this amnesty struggle. Hastert's the key to keeping amnesty off the table. He's the one refusing to allow a vote unless the majority of the majority agrees. His is the back I'm keeping an eye on, as amnesty lovers try to outmanuveur him. So far he's stood firm, I pray he stays that way.

I loved that part as well. A is for amnesty. Even though the GOP has declared that the WOT is the #1 issue, I'll bet the 'amnesty' word will be used in campaign ads against incumbents all over the country.

In theory, I suppose you're right. The salamikazes could use the porous border to cross into the US and stage attacks. That's precisely why it's important to control and know who crosses, where they are, and when they leave.

However, there have been no terrorist attacks originating from across the southern border, and the vast majority of the illegals who cross the border are not terrorists in the first place.

So it is incorrect to say that the two issues are "intricately intertwined." Both serious issues, and both need to be dealt with. But they're not the same issue -- they have much different causes.

Good for him! And any of the other House members that have stood firm againt intense pressure from the Senate, White House, and RNC. I need to send a letter of support to Hastert.

I firmly believe that the Republican CONTROLLED House will pass an "Enforcement" bill and send it to the next house.

There the Republican _Majority_ will probably try to get it to the floor. The CONTROL in the Senate, though, rests with the "moderates" of both parties, NOT with Republicans --- and the outcome is going to rest on what the Demodogs, in particular, believe is the least damaging position for them to take in each of their elections.

It is possible that the illegal immigration issue has finally reached the point that Americans will cast votes based on representative's positions. It's not clear to me yet whether it has... I know most analysts don't believe that to be true yet, though.

I never said they are the same issues. Reread what I wrote. We can't any national security without knowing and controlling who is in the country.

What's the first thing that's done in a time of war? Borders are closed and immigration is severely curtailed. If we are engaging in a WOT, allowing anybody who wants to to enter our country is ridiculous. It makes the WOT a joke.

Boehner and Frist have demonstrated that they will not defend this country. Either their are corrupt or mentally ill. They need to be replaced. Amazing how the highest levels of our government have been infiltrated.

The GOP and Dems are using amnesty in ads, and most of them are claiming to be tough on it while their opponent is not. It really is..something to watch occur.

Ex. The RNC is attacking Laffey has being poor on illegal immigration, when Chafee voted for the sell out bill in the Senate.

They are claiming the guy against Graf in a primary is a conservative for tight control of the borders, but he's a Kolbe cloned open borders liberal.

Then we have Dems like Cantwell out here in WA claiming they are get tough border hawks in their ad buys.

And yet the lie keeps being pushed from D.C. that the American people want amnesty. Well, then, why don't the amnesty lovers in both parties act like it in their campaigns?

Here is an alternative proposal:

How about building a real wall right along the border for no cost at all?

I believe that we could get a few million volunteers to work on it, and even get the building materials paid for by private citizens.

I heard a fellow say that he would work for free and provide his own material as long as he could put his own name on his section of the wall. - And he wasn't poor by any means.

Now what would Nancy say to having a real wall for no cost?

I'm quite sure that I know the answer to that.

Good point. Let's hope the voters look at the voting records of the candidates, since everyone is running as tough on illegal immigration. I guess that's the same as everyone running on cutting taxes - nobody would be dumb enough to run on raising them. So again, the average nonFreeper Joe won't know who to vote for.
