Ohio woman reported missing from Carnival cruise ship

MIAMI – Authorities were investigating the disappearance of an Ohio woman who was reported missing Monday from a Carnival Cruise Lines ship.

The 37-year-old woman, whose identity was not released, had been on a four-day cruise to Key West and Mexico.

The Miami-based cruise line said relatives last saw the woman Saturday night, but did not report her missing until Monday, when the ship returned to Miami. FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said, however, that she was not aware of any delay in reporting the disappearance. “It doesn't look like foul play,” said Orihuela, whose agency is investigating the case.

The disappearance from the Carnival cruise ship Imagination was the latest missing person case involving a cruise this year.

Elizabeth Galeana, 22, of Naples, Fla., apparently fell off a cruise ship in July and drowned. Her body was found off the coast of Italy last month. In May, Daniel DiPiero, 21, of Canfield, Ohio, fell off a cruise ship to the Bahamas after a night of heavy drinking with friends.

The International Council of Cruise Lines, an industry lobbying group, reported earlier this year that a review of data from 15 lines showed 24 reports of missing people between 2003 to 2005.

One of the highest profile cases involving a cruise ship disappearance occurred last summer, when George Allen Smith IV, 26, of Greenwich, Conn., vanished from his honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean after an apparent late night of drinking. Bloodstains were found on a canopy that covers lifeboats. No one has been charged and no body has been found.

I can't recall hearing about someone "lost" during a cruise prior to reading Carl Hiassen's book Skinny Dip. All of a sudden, it's becoming a regular occurrence.

What do you actually do on a cruise?

I can't imagine doing it for fun.

I thought the same thing about sex too.

Series, if you have not been on a cruise, take one. You will be surprised. Eat 24/7, gambling (we don't), shows, dancing, sunsets, sunrises, and sex in between. We've been on several over the last 10 years. Alaska, South Pacific were the best.

Actually, cruising is a great way to see beautiful and interesting places that you want to visit but not stay (I.E. Jamaica, Belize).
The international crew is a bonus. Very interesting meeting people from Romania, Croatia etc.
I particularly enjoy getting dressed up (especially seeing my wife all dolled up), having a martini and listening to live classical music right before dinner. These are not things I get to do in life normally.

The ports of call are just little diversions in between bouts of the above.

Most are tacky. Especially in the Caribbean. If we don't like the port, we stay on board, lie on a lounger, drink beer and read.

I have the opposite problem. My wife has been hounding me for YEARS to take her on a cruise, and I cannot figure out why. I can see wanting to tour Mexico or the Bahama's, but I'd rather do it on my own schedule, with my own vehicle, and stay in my own hotel room. Better yet, I'd rather sail it MYSELF.

But nooooo. She wants a CRUISE. Bah.

I really don't know myself. I have family who goes on them and they say the food is great and they love dressing up. They claim its totally relaxing. To me it sounds boring. I would get bored and want to get off within hours. I won't go on one.

I was on an Alaskan coast cruise four summers ago and it was one of the greatest vacations I've ever been on.

Meals, nightlife, heated pool and spa, all inclusive, except for the cocktails (beer and wine were free while dining). All that and some of the most awesome scenery I have ever seen.

Cruises are awesome.

You can get international service. You have to call and ask for it. You may get a roaming charge out in the middle of the ocean. I had an intrastate plan with Sprint and changed it so I can call other states.

I went on my first cruise last year(Carnival) after thinking for many years what some FReepers on here are posting. It was definitely one of the most relaxing vacations I have ever been on.

I liken it to an all-inclusive resort that floats to different locations. On some cruises, you can be on a different beach every day. You can do activities all day or do nothing. You can go to set formal meals or eat at the buffet any time.

I would definitely go on a cruise again.

There is a lot to do on a cruise and the Imagination is pretty good-sized.

It VERY possible to not see someone for a day or two if your schedules aee a few hours off.

If the family thought she was off doing something else or didn't want to disturb her while they thought she was sleeping this is a very probable scenarion.
