Dems seem likely to pick up midterm seats (NBC/WSJ Poll)
PMSNBC ^ | 09/13/06 | Mark Murray

Posted on 09/13/2006 7:13:08 PM PDT by Recovering_Democrat

WASHINGTON - Less than two months until Election Day, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that more than half of registered voters disapprove of President Bush's job performance, even more disagree with his handling of Iraq and a strong plurality prefer a Congress controlled by the Democrats — all suggesting that Democrats are still poised to pick up seats in the upcoming midterms.

But the poll, which comes out more than a week after administration officials have made a series of speeches on terrorism and after gasoline prices have declined, also shows that Bush and the Republican Party have established a slightly stronger footing than they've held in months. Bush's job approval among registered voters is up two points — giving him his highest rating in the poll since November — and his handling of Iraq is up three, although both gains are within the margin of error.

"likely to pick up midterm seats"

The MSM is backing down from its position several months ago when it was bleating about the dems taking over the House AND Senate. These stupid "polls" are a waste of time.

The Dem-rats are still trying to will the election into
their favor.

The strategy of wishful thinking has been stopped since our
beloved President Reagan stepped into the Oval Office, and
the Internet and cable gave alternatives
to the false propaganda.

Bush's popularity rating will have a direct effect on how Republicans will do in the mid term.

The MSM is backing down from its position several months ago when it was bleating about the dems taking over the House AND Senate.

:) I was wondering who would be the first to post something about that major league "back off" (rhymes with) from the LameStream Media!!!

For months we've been hearing "take over by the Dems!" Now we're hearing "gain seats"...I wonder if in a month or two we might be hearing "Dems hope to contain their losses", and that will be considered a victory!! :) BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

In all seriousness, the Dems just might gain a seat or two. I don't think they'll take over either house of Congress, though.

I also wish the Republicans would've done a better job cleaning out the RINOs. Oh well, we can do it again in a couple years. :)

QUESTION: Could Murray have framed the poll results more negatively? . . . If one were cynical (which I am), one could conclude that Murray purposely manipulated his analysis to reflect current Democrat talking points!

NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY . . .

According to this poll, the President's JA rating has reached its highest level since September of 2005:

9/06 42% approve 53% disapprove (-11)
7/06 40% approve 55% disapprove (-15)
6/06 38% approve 57% disapprove (-19)
9/05 40% approve 55% disapprove (-15)
9/04 47% approve 48% disapprove

*Two years ago and only 2 months before the President's HISTORIC re-election++, this poll posted a JA rating for the President only 5 points higher than it is today -- so much for the President's JA rating falling off the proverbial cliff!!

[++In 11/04, President George W Bush earned 63 million votes (the most votes for a presidential candidate in American history) and become the first candidate since 1988 to garner over 50% of the vote!]

http://pollingreport.com/bushjob2.htm

COMPARATIVE BENCHMARKS:

RASMUSSEN
9/13/06 45% approve 52% disapprove

REALCLEARPOLITICS (RCP) AVERAGE now over 41%!
[Remember, it was only 3 months ago that the Democrats/MSM were salivating at the prospect of the President's JA rating sinking to the mid 20s!!!]

BOTTOM LINE: The trend line is up! [AND the President is maintaining an historically high 80-85% approval rating among Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents.]

FYI: With such a high approval rating from his base, the President's JA rating is actually near or at 50%! Unfortunately, MSM pollsters continue to artificially lower the President's JA ratings by OVERSAMPLING Democrats/Democrat-leaning Independents! . . . In retrospect, this could be an advantage for the Rs -- the Democrats seem to be setting themselves up for another big SURPRISE in November!

Polls don't vote and voter sampling on election day has caused them grief.

This should be posted on every thread about polls between now and the election. It's from the episode of Penn & Teller's show, "Bulls**t," about polls. If you don't want to watch it all, just go to the 2:53 mark for the summation. WARNING! EXTREMELY ROUGH LANGUAGE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW-iPfZbUIY

It's just comical how the MSM touts these "wishful thinking" stories as news. They actually seem to believe there are people out there who think, "Wow, a poll says the Democrats are going to win! I'd better vote Democrat!"

Amazing.

I still remember the polls in the fall of 1980 that said that Jimmy Carter was going to beat Ronald Reagan handily.

I've never believed one of them since......

That's good then, because HIS popularity is significantly higher than THEIRS.

(That's probably why they all want him to campaign for them, and he's going to a couple of fundraisers a week and pulling in lots of money and support).
