The trick is to figure out what is effective, and what is not, and dump the ineffective as a bone to throw to the wolves.

Yep. but it seems he gave some of the most useful intel. pretty tough but still broke him and thats the point isnt it..

Not sure if the video of the counter to this interview with the Human Rights Watch spokesperson but she says that it doesnt matter if the intel was good b/c there is not reason to think that the info wouldnt have come out by other means. perhaps feeding him grapes and giving him a pedicure would make him feel so good he would abandon his violent, murderous tendencies and help us out..

"The conventional wisdom is that torture does not produce good intel."

Ask Shin Bet if these tactics work.

From Wkiipedia:

"The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner's face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt. According to the sources, CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda's toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last over two minutes before begging to confess."

thats what I think of too. There is no long term physical effects to these things... but the attention grab technique, where the interrogator grabs the scum by the collar and jolts him forward, seems extremely excessive..

The conventional wisdom is that torture does not produce good intel.

It depends on whose "conventional wisdom" you believe.

A lot of the "experts" and "ANALysts" say "torture tactics" don't work. Ya wanna bet? "Torture" has been used successfully for thousands of years. If it didn't work, people would have stopped using it many, many moons ago. Put a pair of used women's underwear on a Muzzie's head and he'll never shut up.

I wonder what type of attack it will take in order for Americans to accept waterboarding as SOP and take it up a few notches.

What they want is for other people (soldiers and agents) to risk their lives so that they can preen about how moral they are. All leftism is a posture, the real world can't be allowed to contradict their self-image.

This is true. Retaining ineffective measures is pointless.

That said, to address a point that the lefties are trying to make: If you think that there's a plot to blow up a US building in the next few hours, are you going to try to negotiate the info out of your prisoner? Or are you going to use chemical interrogation and fear?

I submit that the latter is far faster.

That is what I typically read, and I get around. This story rather surprised me. Granted, sleep deprivation and the like is another matter. That seems to work. If one feels good, one feels brave.

The Question remains, is it really torture? or are we using interrogation techniques?

I don't want to see the Dims successfully say we condone torture.

Sleep deprivation isn't torture IMHO

this apparantly foiled an attack on LA. This works. Bottom line. It saves lives.

I have read that chemical truth drugs don't work really. Maybe that is out of date. I also favor if the person being interrogated is critical and time is critical, to allow the President to make a signed finding that it is in the critical national interest to use any means necessary to get an info dump out of the perp. That is Alan Dershowitz's proposal, and I heartily endorse it. We live in a world where one must balance the competing considerations, to get the most perfect moral golden mean. Of course we will often get it wrong. We are after all, simply human, and we make mistakes.
