Surprises from the Edge of the Solar System
NASA Headlines ^ | 9-21-06 | Dr. Tony Phillips

Posted on 09/21/2006 2:38:20 PM PDT by Pete from Shawnee Mission

Sept. 21, 2006: Almost every day, the great antennas of NASA's Deep Space Network turn to a blank patch of sky in the constellation Ophiuchus. Pointing at nothing, or so it seems, they invariably pick up a signal, faint but full of intelligence. The source is beyond Neptune, beyond Pluto, on the verge of the stars themselves.

It's Voyager 1. The spacecraft left Earth in 1977 on a mission to visit Jupiter and Saturn. Almost 30 years later, with the gas giants long ago seen and done, Voyager 1 is still going and encountering some strange things....

.....so now I can't get any privacy in Ophiuchus either.

This makes me regret ever leaving Pluto in the first place.

Who knew??!!!

Do you suppose that global warming could one day poke a hole in the heliosheath?

Press Release

From The Democratic National Committee Headquarters

We're pleased to report that Voyager 1 continues going strong 30 years after it was built and launched.

As you may remember, Voyager 1 was launched in 1977 during Jimmy Carter's term as President. Which shows once more that Democratic leadership can accomplish miracles.

Ummm...there's no chance that Voyager could pop the heliosheath as it exits and the whole bubble deflates, is there?

We must act now to protect the heliosheath! We can't afford not to act. Think of the children... /sarcasm

Yes! Then the whole solar system will go flying backwards around the universe!

(Newton's Third Law for those of you in Rio Linda)

But the flatulent sound it would otherwise make won't be heard in the vacuum, right?

It was just designed for about 3 years. Originally the Voyager probes were just designed to do a flyby of Jupiter and Saturn (and take a close look at the moon Titan). The mission planners were able to extend the mission of Voyager 2 to see Neptune and Uranus.

Obviously since they are powered by RTGs, they have a significant lifespan and the major mission limiting item is propellant to orient towards the Earth for data transmission.

Oh I dunno. Seems to me Dems pass flatulence all the time (it passes as "free speech" and you certainly can hear it in the vacuum of Liberal "thought process"....
