After two years of digging and testing, Alternet.org contributing columnist Christopher Rabb discovered that there is more to a person's heritage than their ancestry.
In order to learn more about his black ancestors, Rabb and his family began a series of DNA tests, which unveiled several things he found troubling.
"I quickly realized that the more intently I sought to learn about my black ancestors, the more I would have to research the white people who owned them," he says. "A notable subset of the slave owners were also my ancestors."
Rabb discovered that some of his slave ancestors had been raped by their owners. While he always suspected this, testing and digging into his family's past confirmed it. It was not an easy fact to come to terms with.

Yep. Rape happens. Next.
Bet one of my ancestors shot him.
So some of us white folks could collect reparations too?
How did this pinhead come to the conclusion that his ancestors were "raped?" Maybe they were just two "consenting adults" engaging in a little "diversity" if you get my drift.
Heh.
He's not surprised; he's just sensationalizing. In 500 years there has been every form of monkey business including the apartheid of the black community today.
Either that, or some young lady decided that the job of the boss's mistress beat picking cotton in the fields.
While your ancestor may have volunteered, the GAR wasn't an all-volunteer army.
And I hope that the author of the story is ready to pay into a reparation fund on behalf of his slave-owning ancestors.
So this moron thinks he's discovered gravity?
Slaves were property. That was the law at the time.
My family has lived in North American since 1619. And no, I am not responsible for acts that took place before I was born.
And no, you can't go back and change the law to make someone feel happy.
We don't "do" ex post facto laws in America.
I would suggest someone get a life and move on. Everyone else has... a long time ago.
Social anthropology is a hobby of sorts of mine and I would guess that number to be between 95%-98% of American blacks (ones who can trace their ancestry to slaves). And you are right, the surprising thing is this guy's surprise - he's a pin head.
In ten thousand years, and maybe within a thousand years, most, if not all, humans will be of mixed race. Races developed because of geographic isolation.
Modern transportation and the development of the third world has been changing that dramatically.
The elimination of races probably would be a net plus for the planet. One less thing to fight about.
please ping me.
Since he has white blood does he have to share in the white guilt burden?
Just a reminder.
A Geneologist did studies on decendents from a prominent Zulu woman.
It was found that Pieter Botha, President of South Africa, and leader of the Oxcart Wing of the Nationalist Party was decended from her. In short, the entire reason for apartheit went down the tubes. And that was before DNA testing was routine.
Geneologies are usually falsified, to claim ancestors. Tracing decendents is much harder to falsify. As they say, Mules always claim their ancestors are horses!
Famous examples: Mahomet's decendants include one Brooke Shields as well as Queen ElizabethII. That's not counting various descendents by several very attractive young shegoats.
