Exactly. A dumb idea that needs to be put down quick.
IIRC, there was some proposed legislation in the past (or was it the S&W agreement?) which specifically exempted law enforcement agencies from having to buy those so-called "smart guns". Does anyone else recall that?
buttons make lovely triggers for electic ignited ammo.
As a 30 year cop(now retired) I want nothing to do with this type pistol. Depending on what you are doing it is easy to hold your pistol in a variety of slightly different ways. Also, we were taught to shoot with the weak hand in the event our strong hand/arm was injured. Further, the point of conformity as to pistol type and ammo within a dept. is so that any cop can use any other cop's weapon in a pinch.
Last but not least the more complex an item, the more there is to go wrong with it. No big deal when you are at the range. It's a big deal when it's $hi!!en and agitten time.
not to mention the differences in grip cause by high levels of adrenaline or stress.
Who says there are 29,000 firearms-related deaths per year? Further, this stooopid gimmick will be disconnected. About as useful as trigger locks which eveyone throws away. I'm ambidextrous... the list goes on.
> Point is the number of accidents are very low <
Seems to me that the number was around 30 per year for genuine children -- below the teenage years.
Or maybe that was the figure only for guns NOT owned by convicted felons.
Having electronics controling the firing mechanism is just asking for someone with a baseball bat beat you to death while you try and change out the batteries.
I can't be certain my full-sized desktop computer will operate all of the time without unpredictable failure. It resides in a comfortable, clean, temperature-controlled office and is not subjected to impacts. At times, it refuses to work for no apparent reason.
Who would want that same delicate technology further miniaturized to fit the harsh environment of a firearm grip? Not me! Spank you very much!

New meaning for Blue Screen of Death- do you really want to hear "Abort, retry, or fail?" from your weapons?
Of course.... there's both pistols and long guns on *both* sides of the bed, so it's a moot point.
I like you two. people after my own heart.
And will they be the same when you truly need your firearm, and are under duress?
Yup... M4 and a P2000 on my side, Remington 870 and a Glock 17 on hers.
"Educating the Smart Gun Users will probably Program the NJIT gun at a local police station's firing range."
Yeah, because that's not frightening or anything. Also, if the thing is electronic then it's going to be subject to interference or EMP, thus disabling it completely in an emergency. (IE: nuclear terrorism anyone?) No thanks, I'll take my plain old dumb gun. So far it's never offered to jump out of the case and go on a rampage.
[no batteries = no boom??
sounds retarded to me..you can still pistol whip the snot out of someone with it...]
It is still a heavy peice of steel and will leave a nasty bump on the head when you throw it at them.
What if you have to witch hands? How many grips does this POS remember? Can I program in my grip when I am running? How about with one hand? How about with one hand and a left support hand?
BS! I don't want it.
You seen Orson Scott Card's new offering, Empire? Sadly, it's on-topic.
"his team aims to improve that rate to 1 in 10,000the Pentagon's standard for military weapons"
So then, if the standard is 1 in 10,000, if you have 10,000 items does that mean it is allowed to fail every time you pull the trigger, as long as it is a different reason each time you pull the trigger?
How about they just replace the trigger with an electric firing mechanism with fingerprint recognition?
(sarc) How about they also install a gyroscope so that if it is held horizontally instead of the proper vertically, it won't fire?
That would put an end to 95% of the gang shootings. (/sarc)
