Viewers' fury at Charlotte's 'sewer rat' mouth (Charlotte Church)
The Daily Mail ^ | September 23rd, 2006 | Martin Beckford and James Tapper

Channel 4 chiefs have been bombarded with complaints about singer Charlotte Church's foul-mouthed new chat show.

Angry viewers condemned the programme as 'coarse, crude and filthy', 'immature and puerile', and 'a load of utter bilge'.

One even added: 'This woman may have had the voice of an angel in the past but now she has the foul mouth of a sewer rat.'

Channel 4's confidential complaints log, seen by this newspaper, shows that the bulk of the protests have been about 20-year-old Miss Church's language.

The show, which begins at 10pm, features the Cardiff-born singer interviewing celebrities and taking part in comic sketches and musical performances.

By the time the third show in the series had been broadcast on September 15, Channel 4 had received 174 complaints almost 15 times as many as the show it replaced, The Friday Night Project, typically generated.

Some 400,000 viewers also deserted the show between the first and second episodes, cutting its audience to 1.7million.

Some of the complaints came in a letter signed by 35 people before the first programme was even transmitted after it was revealed that the pilot show included a sketch portraying the Pope as a Nazi.

The sketch was dropped from the first show when it was broadcast but that did not stop scores more complaints rolling in. One viewer told the network: 'This is killing her talent and she is coming across as a nasty, unpleasant girl.'

The complaints continued this weekend with more viewers attacking Friday's show, the fourth in the series, which featured Miss Church strapped to a giant cross.

Channel 4 said last night: 'The show is irreverent and our Friday night audience knows to expect strong language. It has proven to be a big hit.'

This doesn't surprise me at all. Charlotte can't keep her big mouth shut. It wouldn't surprise me at all if those stories about what she said after 9/11 were true, denied by her or not.

Hatefulness is allowed only in those who are hateful to the US! BTW, I've always hated her voice when accompanied by music. . . sounded more like a shriek than a song. Can't compare her to an angel since I've not heard one, yet!

Shut Up And Sing time.

Yet another case of someone who's true colors come out AFTER they've made their millions and are comfortable.

Look at this girl six years ago and it's hard to believe your looking at the same person, such a shame.

Channel4 is the viewing station of the new Marxists anyway, I very rarely watch it nowadays as it's sank so low!! these weasels wouldn't dare put out a show that denigrated Islam in any way.....cowards!!

If I remember correctly it was something along the lines of her being sick of hearing about 911 and we should just get over it. I chalked it up to her being a moronic, overindulged adolescent, not much more.

Well, she later came out with a statement sort of denying the quotes that had been published, but the original thread on the topic (where most were willing to chalk up her idiocy to her age at the time) is here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/573145/posts

But there's also these little gems which she never backtracked from:

Charlotte Church: B16 is a "Nazi" (Part of her new show)

My point exactly about this kind of behavior only manifesting itself AFTER a celebrity has become financially comfortable. Look at the host of up-and-comers in moveis and TV and you'll havce a hard time finding anyone saying anything along the line of Church's inappropriateness. But when we look at who's making the most noise it's the ones who've been around and shot their mouths opff because they know they've got millions their sitting on if they're rebuked by the public. Church has revealed her inner ugliness. Who knew this was the real her? Not me. She was a good little faker, to keep those pounds and dollars rolling in.

You know, her show must be pretty filthy if it's getting significantly more complaints than Friday Night Project. I'm in the states, but I saw an episode of Friday Night Project and some of the material on there made our crude and raunchy Saturday Night Live look like Sesame Street.

Yeah, you'd think if she's going to pull such a blasphemous stunt that she could at least be a little original.

Probably not a bad move on her part, since her talent was being a good singer FOR HER AGE.

Now that she's older, she's going to have to find some other way to stay in the public eye. Not surprised that she's going the oft-traveled route.

I see a reality show with Paris Hilton in her future.

Very true. I was fooled for a long time too. She seemed so sweet and innocent.

Yep, once she got older and discovered that there were lots of people who could sing as good or better than her, she must have decided that instead of trying to perfect her art she'd best go the quick, slutty route to maintain her fame and fortune.

It's easy to be a liberal when one has millions and can afford to avoid the consequences and problems of liberal social ideas.

Yea, I totally agree. I think their celebrity goes to their heads. They surround themselves with people who are dependent on them to make a living. No one dares to contradict their opinions them so eventually they believe what vomits from their mouths is absolutely right just because they say so.

"Very true. I was fooled for a long time too. She seemed so sweet and innocent"

- From what I heard, she allowed her early success to go to her ego and has been on a downward path ever since. The first negative news that I heard of her was several years ago when, after a concert, she indulged in a loud, profanity laden reaction to a request that she meet backstage with a small group of handicapped fans who were waiting to see her. Apparently, she had not pre-approved the meeting and refused to see them.

Do I take it that Miss Church is Wales's answer to Miss Maness of the Dixie Chicks? PC and doesn't care who the #%@$ knows it?
