Charlotte Church: B16 is a "Nazi"

Ah, to be young, talented, and stupid. From EntertainmentWise.com:

Charlotte Church has whipped up a storm of controversy by appearing as a drug-taking nun and calling the Pope a “Nazi” in her new TV show.

The singer performed a range of outrageous stunts for a pilot of her new Channel 4 talk show, such as smashing open a statue of the Virgin Mary to reveal a can of cider and eating a communion wafer emblazoned with a ecstasy smiley face and pretending to hallucinate. ...

As well as branding the Pope a “Nazi” – despite performing for Pope John Paul II when she was an angelic 12-year-old – she called painfully thin actress Keira Knightley “a scrawny bird” and labelled Posh Spice Victoria Beckham "as thick as two short planks".

Church's latest CD, featuring a modern/pop sound, is titled "Tissues and Issues"; the first single was titled "Crazy Chick." Hey, if the song fits, play it.

Well Ignatius Press did the right thing:

Notice to All Ignatius Press Customers

In light of the recent statements and actions of singer Charlotte Church, Ignatius Press will be dropping all of her products. It is with regret that we do this; Miss Church possesses a great gift from God, and in the past she has used her talent often to offer praise and glory to our Lord. She has performed for the late Pope John Paul II, and in many sacred concerts, televised Christmas celebrations, and her many albums were enjoyed by our customers over the years.

But we cannot stand by a young woman who uses her stature in the media to mock the Eucharist, slander the Holy Father, and denigrate the vows of religious women.

Therefore, our catalogs and website will immediately withraw all compact discs, cassette tapes, DVDs and VHS tapes that feature Miss Church. Please join us in praying for this troubled young woman.

I have always thought that this kid was dump as dirt. Nothing that she has done since 1998 has changed my mind. I have never heard her sing, and that is a good thing.

Charlotte is one of the few "celebrities" on the internet whose nekkid girl pictures are REAL.

She's a rabid lefty. I don't know if she's doing it for publicity or for real.

I remember her shooting her mouth off a few years ago about something stupid. Now she comes back for an encore.

She was a talented 12 year old, but as she matures in years her singing talent and emotional state aren't maturing with her. She seems pretty desperate for attention these days, a sure sign that her stagnant singing talent won't carry her any further. The other sign of her demise is her obnoxious, blasphemious sellout of the good God who gifted her. Poor kid, pray for her.

OK, this is too insane. Have we no standards at all? Charlotte Church was acting in a TV show when she said those things; she was not stating her opinion. From the outrageous other things she did, it's plain she's portraying a troubled person, whose actions and opinions are doubtfully portrayed as worthy of emulation. Is her choice of characters bad jugdment? Quite possibly, but this is no basis on which to judge that.

This thread makes FR look stupid.

(Demonic possession? Looks more like Kerrionic possession!)

Dear dangus,

"From the outrageous other things she did, it's plain she's portraying a troubled person,..."

Her TV show is a talk show, of which she is apparently the host, and thus portrays... herself.

But I agree, she portrays a troubled person.

Apparently, in the skits and sketches on the show, she has decided that the way to make a buck and a bang is to blaspheme the Most Blessed Sacrament and call the Holy Father names.

Ignatius Press, and this thread, appear to be right on.

Get a grip.

The picture on the left is posed, lighted, painted, dodged, burned, airbrushed, bent, folded, spindled, and mutilated.

The picture on the right is a candid shot. Getting a good, well exposed, flattering, candid shot of a singer is not easy ... getting a lousy one is trivial.

Your pictures do NOT support your thesis.

It might still be true; but you need to make a better case.

Ignatius Press should have pulled her stuff a long time ago on the basis of how she conducts her personal life, let alone her professional one. She's getting about on par with Paris Hilton when it comes to the tabloids.

This is a legitimate topic for open thread discussion on the Religion Forum, e.g. should an entertainer who is a believer say or do things which are contrary to his/her theology?

So because she leads a poor personal life, it's justified to spread ridiculous garbage about her?

What in the article is factually incorrect?

Is she expressing her views of the Pope, or is she playing a character? If she's expressing her own views, then I'd guess I can only criticize the writing for not making that clear.

Incidentally, I have no problem with her criticizing the anorexia culture; that seems a bizarre thing to throw into such an artice: Charlotte calls the Pope a Nazi, and Hollywood actresses skinny...?

Dear dangus,

In that this is a talk show, and she is the host, either the characters she plays represent her perspectives, or she is at least acquiescing to these portrayals because she believes they'll be entertaining or amusing.

The headline says she called the Pope a Nazi. The story seems to infer that it was a character, and, therefore, not necessarily a statement of her opinions. Now I'm hearing the show contains both monologues and skits. If she said it in the monologue, than I guess the story merely misled me, but the general tone of the story IS, in fact, justified, and sorry for all the ruckus. If she said it in character, it might demonstrate tasteless choice of material, but it is entirely a different thing that making a statement that she believes the Pope to be a Nazi.

As much as I (may have) over-reacted on this thread, myself, even *I* took the demon-possessed comment as comic.
