Remember the anthrax attack following 9/11?

Remember the anthrax attack following 9/11?

Ray Robison does.

“There are two prevailing theories. One theory is that a US scientist did it. The other is that the Saddam regime of Iraq or another rogue government with anthrax capability gave anthrax to al-Qaeda. Other theories abound but I will limit the argument to the two theories that fit the facts best.

“Those who follow the news about the anthrax attack know that for years the FBI has been investigating American defense scientists. Let me be more specific. The FBI has been pursuing U.S. citizens with high level clearances, years of professional experience and demonstrated loyalty to this country. The FBI has found nothing.”

Ray finds a lot of problems with this theory. Then, there’s the alternative. Ray looks at it with logic and informed perspective, and finds it more probable that Saddam’s supply of weaponized anthrax was delivered by Al Qaeda. But, as he notes, a lot of people have made up their minds that no such collaboration existed.

“What does your common sense tell you? Most of my friends (usually military) at the time of the attacks believed the anthrax was a continuing, near simultaneous attack with the plane hijackings of 9/11. It seemed like a combined arms attack, a fundamental of modern warfare. Could it just be so simple that al Qaeda hit us not once, but twice in a week? And what would the effect of such a scenario be on an FBI charged with the domestic counterterrorism mission? Would a second al Qaeda attack rub salt on an already horrible wound? And wouldn’t it be better for the FBI if the second attack was done by a military scientist, thus the Department of Defense’s fault and not a subsequent FBI counterterrorism failure? There are still a lot of questions and for me the answer is and always will be that until I see the proof I will never believe an American scientist did this instead of al Qaeda. I just don’t believe it.”

I remember reading, back at the time, about evidence connecting a Pakistani in northern New Jersey to the anthrax attacks. The evidence against this fellow was much more compelling than that against David Hatfill, but the FBI didn't want to hear it.

The first cases turned up ten miles down the road from where Atta and other 9-11 jackers were staying, and there is no other reasonable source for such stuff those guys would have had other than Saddam Hussein.

I was living right next to Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD at the time where they were doing tests on the anthrax.

There are lots of sources now that it's official that the anthrax was not "weaponized". It was merely well grown, cleaned and ground.

It was not hardened against antibiotics but it was particalized so fine that it went through envelope paper as if it were not there. It was meant as a warning, i.e.

Hey, fools, some of my friends just knocked your two towers down and if you try to do anything about it, this is what could happen, ****-you, and have a nice day.

Saddam Hussein

Nobody else on the planet ever had an anthrax program that sophisticated.

My 5 year contract was cut short by 3 years as a direct result of these attacks (There was more than one antrhax attack). My company folded and ten people lost their jobs because of it.

Once a perp is identified, I intend to file for damages.

Keep in mind, the postal service has investigated anthrax threats for many years, but they almost always turned out fake. Until this one.

I agree. I think it was a carefully planned death cultist who mailed the letters, then got on a plane out of the country.

That is what I always thought, that it was an al Qaeda operation.

BTW, the envelopes were covered in tape. Only enough paper was exposed to allow for a controlled release of a steady stream of anthrax powder over a reasonable period of time ~ and that would be from the time of mailing to a few days later.

Unfortunately for the attackers, they screwed up ~ the letters they so carefully mailed in Florida ended up in mail transport equipment (MTE) thought to be empty.

Rather than spreading anthrax spores through airport baggage and express operations, several airplanes, postal facilities and important government buildings, the letters got carried by ground transport and bypassed almost everything but 3 main postal facilities and a US Senate mailroom.

This attack was not a "warning" ~ it was a full scale attack against the main postal operations in the capital city of the United States of America, the Congress, and the main baggage and express operations in New York City, and Washington DC.

It's roughly the equivalent of a severing of the head!

I thought I read that we originally got Saddam started with some anthrax during the Iran-Iraq war. If that is true, Saddam's anthrax would have a USA signature. So, if we gave it to Saddam, Saddam could have conducted the attack with our own anthrax and it would have been traced back to our own supply.

The question is, why was that anthrax attack a one-time bad deal? We responded to 9/11 by overthrowing the Taliban in Afghanistan and (IMHO) we responded to the anthrax attacks by invading Iraq. Why was it possible to attack us once but not again?

I doubt the DIRECT involvement of al Qaeda or Iraq...notwithstanding the "Death to Israel", "Death to America", and "Allah is Great" at the end of the letters.

Those phrases are pretty much "standard" Left Coast rhetoric: the kind you'll see on signs in San Francisco, etc.

I've read the FBI microbiology (David Beecher's)report, and it is clear there was no "additive": just very fine particle size-obtainable in a flash dryer,or (perhaps) a bead grinder.

I always THOUGHT clumping would keep the stuff from being effective, and that is true if you are talking about a battlefield weapon, but fine powders will aerosolize when disturbed by air currents.

I'm sure most mailrooms - especially in Florida- had AC running - or fans, at the very least.

Beecher cited one case in his report, in which overseas researchers carelessly dropped a little piece of infected brain tissue on steps. Ordinary foot traffic ground it fine enough to disperse, and to contaminate a large area.

And the problem with MOST of these theories, including the author's, is that they try to make the two mutually exclusive.

My theory all along is that Hatfill somehow was compromised to SUPPLY Al-Qaeda or whoever---maybe even unknowingly or indirectly. It's just too convenient that the attacks ended the minute he became the target. Al-Qaeda continued to function in the U.S. (as seen in the Buffalo stings) well after 9/11.

Does anyone besides me remember a National Enquirer feature just days after 9/11 tell all by a woman who had been in the sack with OBL? I remember she insulted his size, insulted his entire performance. It was hilarious at the time, but I've always wondered if that could have triggered the attacks.

Nope, anthrax occurs all over the world. We diagnose cases in livestock in several US states every year and the same can be said in other countries. This was not an unusual anthrax strain but one found in multiple locations throughout the world. Nevertheless, I see Al Qaeda fingerprints all over the human targets on the basis of common sense. Just as a side note--the head of Saddam's bioweapons program did her graduate work at the University of Missouri.

The anthrax strain was a highly weaponized one.

The only possibilities that make sense is that a person in the military/industrial complex wanted to wake us up to the threat; or,

Saddam gave a very small sample to al-Qaeda and he decided to not give them any more after the US starting beating the war drum against Iraq as well as Afghanistan.

The letters were postmarked a week after 9/11, and the location where the hijackers trained was already reported in the news by then - the National Enquirer letter seems to me an attempt to create a false geographic link to the hijackers.

There's so much people just dance around or ignore - like why Daschle and Leahy, of all people, are the governmnental figures singled out for animus by Al Queda or Iraq, in the second set of attacks.
