Sons of Confederate Veterans disowns George Allen
The Daily Press ^ | September 28, 2006, | Hugh Lessig

Posted on 09/29/2006 10:09:22 AM PDT by van_erwin

The Sons of Confederate Veterans are demanding that Sen. George Allen apologize for apologizing.

Allen has tried to mend fences with minorities over his use of the word "macaca," a racially-charged word, in part by saying he has regretted his infatuation with the Confederate flag.

That touched off an angry response Thursday from two leaders of the 4,000-member Confederate group, who said Allen has turned his back on them.

"We feel he's using our flag to wipe the muck from his shoes that he's now stepped in," said Frank Earnest of Virginia Beach, state division commander of the group.

Allen sounds more and more like a looseer, even if he wins.

I'm depressed.

Not too many candidates can alienate blacks and the Sons of Confederate Veterans at the same time.

WHere the heck does macaca come from anyway? I thought I knew them all - apparently that was one word I nver heard before.

I think it's time for everyone to step back and take a deep breath about all of this apologizing.

Actually, I think it may be time to have a good laugh about all of this.

I like Senator Allen, and I'm going to vote for him.

I think Mr. Webb is a garden variety Democrat who brings positively nothing to the race - except that he is in it.

Man, I could use a drink!

Man! It looks like everyone hates Allen these days. It's amazing that he's leading in the polls, huh?

Now an entire organization with over 4000 members throughout the South hates him too. I guess he's done for now, eh?

When did Conservatives turn into such a bunch of crybabies. Instead of DEFENDING their own against a transpeent smear job some Freepers are turning French and waving the white flag without a fight.

Really pathetic to see how utterly gutless certain segments of the "Conservatives" have become. All the Leftist have to do is scream accusations at them and they fold like cheap table cloths. Utterly pathetic

You're right. While the Sons of Confederate Veterans serve a good purpose in preserving historical sites, artifacts, and other priceless Americana, no candidate--Republican or Democrat--is going to benefit from their endorsement in any race above the level of county sheriff. I saw part of a video tape they produced about 10 or 12 years ago which argued about how much better off blacks were when living under the plantation system, with their kindly masters and overseers, than as emancipated citizens. Many of these guys, for better or worse, are still fighting the civil war. Neither Allen or Webb needs them.

Allen needs to learn:

You can appease some of the people some of the time,
and you can appease all of the people some of the time,
but you can't appease all of the people all the time.

Now, they have him on the run -- from both sides.

"WHere the heck does macaca come from anyway?"

LOL....apparently, it is a slur that was used by European settlers (AKA pieds-noirs, as the French called them) in the former French colonies of Tunisia and Algeria.

That one word set off a storm that has only been encouraged by WaPo and the liberal press. Allen didn't handle it well either.

Instead of dissembling for alomost 2 weeks (and provoking a steady stream of "Allen not apologizing for slur" headlines), Allen's team should have provided a quick apology in order to get the candidate back on track.

As much as I love the SCV and the fight they've pursued for Confederate heritage, I do kind of wish that they'd pursued this a little more quietly. No, I don't think Allen should've embarked on the apologizing that he did, but in the current political climate I can understand why he felt like he had to.

I understand how they feel, though, I do wish he'd stood up more strongly against the macaca caca and not let people use the flag against him. But what are they going to do? Vote for Born Idiot?

If the SCV doesn't like him, I'm for him. Notice how pissed off the "true conservatives" are that Sonny Perdue got 90% of the GOP primary vote over a "confederate hertiage" candidate endorsed by the Georgia KKK.

That being said, I don't get the infatuation with running this guy for President when he's having trouble winning his own heavily-Republican state. The thought of running Allen nationwide gives me Bob Dole vibes. If freepers were smart they'd support re-electing Allen to the Senate and running a POPULAR, CONSERVATIVE, SWING-STATE GOVERNOR for President.

I am honored to be a long standing member of the SCV and UCV. However, the job of the SCV should be to honor those that passed and be the caretakers of the history and items that our ancestors left. Entering into the fray of racial or Civil War politics is a no win situation for Allen or the SCV. The SCV members of Virginia are only opening themselves up to ridicule and unwarranted scrutiny. This bonehead move by the SCV in Virginia will ultimately backfire. No one said that many of the members of the SCV were logical and politically savvy.

You could be right, but my worry is that if no SCV votes for him, that could be a percent of the votes he needs. They just the plablicity of this story could switch some independents who respect the group. I don't like this at all. I thought after TO was hospitalized and Allen fell out of the spotlight, this was going to be over and Allen would revive his campaign. Now I am wanting to move to Virginia today so I can vote. Although, I have to worry about Senator Santorum in Pennsylvania too...this is not quite a nightmare, but not a good position to be in right now.

It's not an actual racial slur. I'm convinced of it now. It's not even an obscure one in French Algeria.

And I don't know why people are worried. This is going to benefit Allen.

There are some people who will just believe it. There are black people who just have to hear the whiff that somebody is a racist and they'll believe it. It doesn't matter how much of a lie it is. And why not? Better than taking the chance, right?

It's simply impossible to win against this. You know, there are some who said that media bias helps Republicans because it strengthens them, but when it comes to this kind of disgusting onslaught, media bias does work.

IOW, bigots come in all colors. If you are looking for justification for your ingrained prejudices, you'll find them every time, even if you have to manufacture them from shreds, innuendo, gossip and nonsense words.

Did you read this? From the link:

"Patricia Waring, who described herself as the wife of Allen's rugby coach in 1978 and 1979, said she overheard Allen repeatedly using the epithet during a match in 1978. She said she confronted Allen at the time, urging him not to use that word.

"I heard to my left, the N-word, and I heard it again, and I looked around and heard it again," she said. "And there was this fellow sitting on the ground. He was putting on red rugby shoes -- it is seared in my brain, believe me. And he was kind of showing off, I guess, but he was telling a story and . . . in the story was a lot of N-words."

More brain searing from the left, LOL!

The Treason Media only gave Allen a chance to knock HIMSELF out and he took it. Actually if he wins by at least 5% he still would be a viable candidate for VP then President later. This could be a good learning experience for him as to just how low the Treason Media will go.
