The Coasties, especially "the swimmers," get so little recognition and appreciation for what they do

Every time some leftist drone like Spike Lee talks about how it took three days for the federal government to come help New Orleans I want to scream about the 9,000 people rescued by the Coast Guard in the first 48 hours.

The US Coast Guard isn't exactly a local organization, now is it?

These guys are golden.

I've sent off some recommendations through my elected representatives that we expand the Coast Guard to add responsibility for guarding our land based "coast."  Fold the Border Patrol into the Coast Guard command structure (Customs too? probably not) but then augment them with a new, dedicated, pseudo military component to add the right elements to their TO and E.  Build up three (or more) new Coast Guard units based on the structure and equipment of a Marine Expeditionary Unit.  Base them along the US Mexican border with responsibility for securing that border and with being in a position to respond to any and all domestic emergencies, ranging from the next Hurricane to the next terrorist attack.  It fits the Coast Guards existing mission to a tee.

Search and rescue.  Safety inspections.  Interdiction of smuggling (drugs, people, weapons).  Responding to disasters.  All 100% in keeping with their existing mission and culture.

Cute! I heard that expression a bit differently, but we come down on the same page, and yours comes with graphics. I remember Deputy Dawg, he was more of a role model than some Dads. HE HE HE!

Well those 110 shots were all in about 4 seconds, and the Dude's body was a moving(jerking a lot) target for the Swat team.

Honorable Mention Awards for 10-1-06

Circumstances have conspired to have me preside over the awards for the Sunday Talk Show thread for two weeks in a row.  My response to this set of circumstances is to quote the old joke of what the man said as he was being ridden out of town on a rail: "except for the honor of the thing, I'd just as soon walk."  The flip side of this arrangement is that you all should be spared my cheerful ministrations till sometime after Thanksgiving, so you may truly have something to be thankful for this year!

To reiterate what I said last week, my approach is to pull "notable or quotable" posts in whole or in part into a subset of the thread.  I then cull through those posts to try to come up with the top 10, more as a fun exercise than as any kind of contest.  Remember, my purpose is to provide pointers for people to things they might have missed.  Providing some hierarchy to that can help and it can add a bit of fun to the process.  Make no mistake, every post on this thread is worthy of an award.  Alas Babylon! and I have been using the phrase The Jedi Council back and forth for some time now.  The group that participates here are truly masters of gathering, analyzing and communicating relevant information to an amazing extent.

I'm also not much better off than last week, having over 1,000 posts this week instead of the nearly 1,300 of last week.  Somehow it doesn't seem that much less work!

Also as stated last week, my prejudices lead me to prefer posts with factual information on a topic being discussed, particularly with references and, best of all, with links.  That doesn't make that right or wrong, it's just my prejudices.  After that I look for posts that "move the discussion forward."  What I mean by that is I want to see posts that provide insight, not just argument.  I get plenty of argument from my kinds.  I prefer enlightenment (even if it contradicts something I think is so).  Finally, I value the posts that provide running commentary on what is actually being said on the shows.  There's no way to watch all of the shows (and in some cases no desire) and these posts make that unnecessary in many cases.  I also value funny posts, but I tend to use those mostly as tie breakers.

Once I've weighed the posts that excel, given my prejudices above, I pull those out of the original list and set them aside until I come up with a list of 10 posters that I will then try to rank from 10 to 1.  In the meantime, however, I don't want to discard the other posts that I pulled out of the thread as noteworthy.  The primary reason, going back to my desire to provide signposts for things we may have missed, is that the ranking process I do only reflects my prejudices and that doesn't in any way lessen the merit of pointing people to the remaining posts.  After all, I have been known (see my tag line) to make mistakes.

Therefore, allow me to present to you a list of posters and posts, in alphabetical order by screen name, that I refer to as the honorable mention list.  Again, these reflect my own point of view, but I hope it will prove valuable.  I know I got a lot out of these posts and from these posters.  The top ten will come a little later.

Top 10 for 10/1/06

Tenth Place AliVeritas

Ninth Place dirtboy

Eighth Place YaYa123

Seventh Place onyx

Sixth Place Bahbah

Fifth Place Morgan in Denver

Fourth Place samantha

Third Place A.Hun

Truly spectacular showing this week, providing both pith commentary on other posts and very insightful original posts on numerous topics.  Analysis, links, references and original reporting.  Impressive performance on all levels.

Second Place MNJohnnie

Exceptionally strong analysis, but that seems an all too obvious and inadequate comment for the depth and breadth of MNJ's contribution this week.  Some of the strongest commentary and most well documented and sourced reference material we have on some very significant issues.  Beyond the awards, I want to thank you for some excellent insight that added to my own understanding of what was going on... and after all, what helps me is what my selfish little mind appreciates the most <g>

First Place Seattle Conservative

Again, my infatuation with Princess Links approach overwhelms all of the rest of my other prejudices.  Though filled with facts and links, as usual, she didn't shy away from analysis and some very weighty judgments.  Well done.  I trust you are back for more than a drive by visit.

Ooops.

Of course, given the volume I've dealt with the last two weeks it's frankly amazing this is the only mistake of this sort (so far discovered) that I've made.

Bahbah, sorry for the oversight.

Wow . . I have been off FR for quite a while until the past few weeks and when I can be on, my time is so limited that I just skim the surface quickly. Rarely have time for the talk shows and didn't know anyone was doing this much work reading posts.

Whew. Are ya'll sure you really want to do that? You deserve a vacation. .

There are five of us who have "taken on the burden" of doing these reviews and awards. I agreed to do it because 1) it really stoked my ego to be invited (hey, I'm just being honest!) and 2) I saw the value of the "awards" as a "ping list" for the posts that I and others might have missed while trying to keep up with the incredible pace of this thread.

Alas Babylon! has created an incredible meeting place by providing us this thread every week for many years (many before I got involved, as well). I really do believe that this thread on FR is beginning to make waves within the broader world, including the old media shows that we are commenting on. As such being able to contribute in any way is a real thrill.

Now, I mentioned that I'm one of five folks who have so far gotten involved in doing this weekly review. This is a totally unauthorized operation (the secretary can disavow all knowledge of our actions) and has no official status with anyone, anywhere. Having said that, it's still an amazingly well organized bit of chaos, even if I do say so myself. As it happens I have done the honors for two weeks running, rather than the once every five or six weeks we seem to be settling on normally. Last week I covered for our fearless leader, Rodguy911, as he was a bit indisposed. This week was my regularly scheduled round. That should mean that I'm not going to be rescheduled till sometime after Thanksgiving. It looks like you all lucked out some!

I will leave you to the tender mercies of the rest of the Jedi Council for the next 8 to 10 weeks!

Actually, to be completely honest, the phrase Jedi Council is one that AB and I have bandied back and forth for a couple of months now. In my mind it does not represent the small group of us who are self appointed reviewers of the thread. Instead it represents the entirety of the folks who participate here on the Sunday Talk Show Thread. Welcome to the Jedi Council!

You are behind in your dues. Now pony up!

Congratulations to all you guys. Great job Phsstpok! Thanks for all the effort.

Great weekend posts and the winners were fantastic. Once again, I learn more on FR than I ever did reading the Sunday paper or watching the Sunday Pundit Programs.
