PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: With the First Lady involved in events related to the National Book Festival this weekend, the President spent Saturday at Camp David where he enjoys the more challenging mountain bike riding trails. Yesterday, an article by Laura Bush (her preferred way of being addressed) appeared in the Opinion Journal of The Wall Street Journal. In it, the First Lady discusses the books that inspired her to champion literacy. Here's a link to the article, and following is the list of the books that inspired her, in the order she ranks them:
1. "Hop on Pop" by Dr. Seuss (Random House, 1963).2. The "Little House" Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder (Harper, 1932-43).
3. "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1880).
4. "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott (1868).
5. "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain (1884).
In the meantime, President Bush is set to campaign heavily for Republican candidates between now and election day. Tomorrow he beings a three-day swing through Nevada, California, Arizona and Colorado. White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said GWB will be on the road almost constantly between now and Election Day. "You're going to see a very active travel schedule. He's going to be all over the country campaigning for Republicans," Snow said at a recent breakfast. "There are a lot of candidates saying, 'Please, please, please, come to my district or come to my state.'"
The First Lady and Vice President Cheney have already been on a heavy campaign schedule. Now, with just over a month left in the mid-term campaign, the President will join them on the campaign trail.

— Oct. 2, 2006: President Bush meets with the Prime Minister of Turkey at the White House, Washington, DC.— Oct. 2, The President attends a Heller for Congress Reception at the Mercury Air Center, Reno, Nevada.
— Oct. 3, GWB attends a Richard Pombo for Congress Reception at the Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium, Stockton, California.
— Oct. 3, President Bush attends a John Doolittle for Congress Reception at the Serrano Country Club, El Dorado Hills, CA.
— Oct. 3, The President attends a Republican National Committee Reception in Los Angeles, CA. (Wish I could go to this, sigh.)
— Oct. 4, President Bush attends a Rick Renzi for Congress Reception at the Camelback Inn, Scottsdale, Arizona.
— Oct. 4, GWB attends a Beauprez for Governor Reception at the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center, Englewood, Colorado.
— Oct. 5, The National Constitution Center awards former Presidents George H.W. Bush and [that other former prez] the Liberty Medal for their fundraising work, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- Oct. 5, There will be a briefing on No Child Left Behind and the education agenda at the Department of Education in Washington. The President will also visit a school campus in Washington, and make remarks on No Child Left Behind. He President also will meet with the National Commander of the American Legion in the Oval Office.
- Oct. 6, there will be a tour of a Federal Express sorting facility in Washington followed by a roundtable on job growth and the economy. The President will also participate in a photo opportunity with members of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force/Headquarters European Theater of Operations, United States Army Veterans Association in the Oval Office, and he will make remarks at the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in the East Room of the White House.
EXTENDED SCHEDULE:
— Nov. 28-29, 2006: President Bush will go to Tallanin, Estonia for meetings with the President and Prime Minister of Estonia and then travel to Riga Latvia for the NATO summit.
The first thing a leader when faced with an enemy is to lead his people against that enemy. He stands aside the pile of rubble, calls out the enemy by name, and announces that we are coming to get them.
The mark of a leader is less in what he personally does, and more in what he guides his people to understand, and inspires them to do.
Clinton stayed up nights and went to great lengths to cover up or downplay the threat to this nation from the Islamo-Fascists. We saw this after the first World Trade Center bombing, after Waco, after TWA-800, and after the other more obvious acts of terrorism.
He lead us down the path of obliviousness to the threat that this mortal enemy poses.
That is not the mark of a leader.
Gen. Franks isn't one of those. I didn't need to read his book to know Clinton did absolutely zip nil on national security, either, but Franks' discussions of the "plans" which were made prior to Pres. Bush's election shows catching Osama sure wasn't one of them.
My prayers go with Jon and my gratitude for his service for our country.

I have a neat (at least I thought it was!) GWB story to share. Last night a friend and I took our daughters to a Michael W. Smith concert. He is a very well known and popular contemporary Christian musician/songwriter/singer--one of our favorites. I had forgotten until he told this story that he is also a friend of the Bushes. He said he likes to tell the story behind his songs and then told this one...
About 6 weeks after 9/11 he was in the Oval Office with GWB. He said they, like everyone else, were just processing the whole event--talking, praying, etc. Michael said near the end of the conversation, GWB said "W, you need to write a song about it." It was so funny--Michael spoke it just as GWB would--said the W as 'dubya' and spoke GWB's inflection/accent. I can't communicate to you on paper how funny it was when he said it--their shared middle initial as a nickname.
Anyway, Michael said that he didn't really think about it much afterwards until 6 months later. He was on his farm (outside Nashville) and looked up at his flagpole and the flag flying--and said that he just had a meltdown. He said that the song just came to him at that moment and he rushed into the studio to get it on paper. He called Wes King--another well known musician in Christian circles--to help him with the lyrics. It is a fabulous song about the flag--I had heard it before and also seen the video--and was in tears last night hearing him perform it.
I will post the lyrics and also a site where you can see the video that goes with it--many images from 9/11 as well as other patriotic pictures of the flag. If you are not a Christian, don't be put off by this--actually, I don't think that God is even mentioned. I think that everyone who frequents the Dose would enjoy it--and I just loved the GWB story that went with it! :)

I know that, nor was it my intention to imply any such thing. Books by the good guys, like Gen. Franks, help to balance the totally false record the Clintonistas and their fellow travellers are trying to impart to history. I merely wanted to strongly make it clear that we have our own first-hand experiences with those times. For us, books can help flesh out behind-the-scenes details, but we don't need books to tell us the truth.
Instead, we can help make sure the truth gets passed down to future generations (which, of course, is what Gen. Franks is doing in his own book). We can tell our children and grandchildren the truth. We can be watchful of what goes in textbooks used to teach our children and grandchildren. We have an important role to play to ensure that the truth is not covered up forever.
I thought about my grandkids, and what will happen politically when they are grown and I am gone. I decided to leave them a detailed explanation of what happened during the Clinton years and after the election of President Bush, especially after 9/11.
I have saved newspapers, magazines, DVD's, letters, and mailings. I also have my own recollections.
I am compiling this stuff into a big scrapbook which will explain what REALLY happened. It's all I can do.
What a neat photo. It brings tears to my eyes--those older men, many of them now frail who sacrificed so much for us. Thank you for posting this.
My fil died on Labor Day and I think I am right now particularly sensitive and grateful to our veterans. My fil was a prisoner of war for a time at the end of the WWII. Several years ago his medals were put in a shadow box and I get tears in my eyes every time I look at them. We talked about them earlier this year when one of my kids had a question about them and I told him how much I appreciated his service and how I loved looking at the medals. He told me that none of the other kids had ever said anything and that we could have them someday. I told him how honored we would be to have them in our home.
Mystery, I am so grateful to your familiy's service to our country. I don't take for granted the sacrifices you make. Please keep us posted. Prayers for Jonathan and for all of your family.

This is stone-cold true. Although he's chronologically 60, Clinton seems perpetually stuck at the 18-22 age group in many respects. He is a quintessential hedonist.
This is brilliant, Miss Marple. As "average" folks, we sometimes make the mistake of thinking what we can do is only a small thing. In reality, what you are doing is a great thing -- great in the serious sense of that word. You are leaving what amounts to a time capsule for your descendants, and it is a gift beyond price from you to them.
More of us should do something similar.
