Passer-by catches baby in 3-story fall
The Denver Post ^ | 10/01/2006 | By Felisa Cardona

The 9-month-old, left alone by young babysitters, was dangling from a railing before losing her grip.

The baby girl's tiny hand was wrapped around the third-floor railing of a Denver condominium complex, her feet dangling over the sidewalk below.

Mary Bussey and her son Brandon, who were on their way to his football game Saturday afternoon, saw the baby hovering above their heads.

The 9-month-old girl was crying, left alone while she was supposed to be in the care of her 13- and 10-year-old uncles, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said Sunday.

The baby's teenage mother left the girl with her brothers while she went to work Saturday, Jackson said.

The boys wandered off and left the front door open, allowing the baby to crawl out onto therailing at the Shadow Wood condominiums at 3141 S. Tamarac Drive.

"I thought someone was hanging on to the baby from the other side," Bussey said. "I thought, 'What a rotten trick."'
But Bussey quickly realized that there was no trick and nobody was holding on to the baby.

Bussey told 13-year-old Brandon to run up the stairs and grab the baby before she fell. Bussey positioned herself under the railing.

"Her little fist was the only thing hanging on. The poor little thing could not hold on anymore," Bussey said.

Brandon didn't make it to the third floor. As the baby let go of the railing, Bussey put out her arms.

"I was very scared," Bussey said. "All I could say was, 'Don't drop. Don't drop."'

The little girl fell, and Bussey caught her.

"It's a really weird feeling having a baby fall in your arms," she said. "I held her to my body and hugged her. She completely stopped crying."

God bless this child, she is going to need it. I actually feel sorry for the mom, she was going to work. It was definitly wrong for her to leave the baby with her brothers, but that was no excuse for them to leave. Where are all the adults? It looks like this is a house full of minors in charge of a baby.

The baby: "like, what's the big deal?"

LOL. The kid wass probably thinking "kewl, let's do that again".

Seriously though, stupid stupid move on the part of the mother. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you have children having children.

Thank god, that lady happened to be walking by and had the compassion and presense of mind to react.

Give that woman a medal.

Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman thanked Brandon and his mother Sunday with framed letters of commendation, movie and dinner passes and baseball caps filled with candy.

"You did what we expect heroes to do, and we appreciate that," Whitman told Bussey and her son.

Yet another story of an irresponsible teenaged mother. The baby needs to be put into foster care immediately.

A wonderful story, no question.

What I feel conflicted about is the prospect that the baby will be taken away from her mother. Yes, it was not a good idea to leave the baby only with a couple of young boys to watch her. But the baby is still likelier to be better off staying with a mother who is working to support her than going into the hands of the state social workers.

Hopefully they can work this out somehow without taking the baby away from her mother.

The article states the baby was returned to her mother on Sunday, and that the 13 year old uncle was assigned to watch the baby!!! WTF??

Forget foster care. The baby needs to be put up for adoption immediately and the teenage mother should be required to have her tubes tied.

left alone while she was supposed to be in the care of her 13- and 10-year-old uncles,

Good grief!!!!! Any parent knows that when you leave a youngster alone or with young siblings, you chain them all to the bed or lock them in a closet.

Bussey said the baby's mother briefly thanked her for catching the girl and asked Bussey to explain how it happened.

It "happened" because the baby's mother is a moron.

13 is old enough for most responsible youth to babysit, provided they have domonstrated some level of responsibility. Obviously, this 13 year old is not competent enough and the mother used poor judgement. I was babysitting 3 to 7 year olds when I was 12.

No new laws! You cannot outlaw stupidity.

I agree with you. The mother was careless but she needed to work.

She shouldn't have had a baby but she did.

Foster homes and state care are not always the greatest things and if this mother loves the baby and learns her lesson, the baby should stay there...with observation.

We are sometimes too quick to snatch babies away, and we are sometimes too slow to do it.
