NICKEL MINES, Pa. Six people were killed by a gunman at a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County Monday, according to the county coroner.
Several others were taken to hospitals with injuries, authorities said.
"So far, six confirmed dead, and the helicopters are pulling into (Lancaster General Hospital) like crazy," Coroner G. Gary Kirchner said.
More than one victim was also taken to Hershey Medical Center in Hershey.
Earlier, state police Cpl. Ralph Striebig said "there are a number of people dead. ... The exact number I do not know yet."
The police told FOX News that it was in fact a hostage situation and that the shooter is now killed. It's not yet known whether the shooter is among the six deaths reported by the coroner. There were at least 12 people injured, along with the deaths, police said. Not motive is yet known.
There is a news conference scheduled at the school sometime Monday afternoon.

Fox is reporting that the shooter is a truck driver. Non Amish.
Trooper on Fox just said the shooter told his wife he was acting out to get revenge for something that happened 20 years ago. Earlier he said that the shooter targeted the girls. He tied their feet together. He took lumber into the school with him and barred the exits.
Trooper said the shooter let the adults and the boys go. Lined the girls up in front of the blackboard. Apparently all victims who died and were injured were female.
I would never in a million years have suspected an Amish person. Never.
I can't [expletive deleted] some asshole took these kids that were as vulnerable as pups and treated them this way.
I've weighed in on lots of things over the years and never before have I said - not even about the ragheads that have been dominating the news for the past 5 years -- never have I said "death is too good" for anyone.
I'm beside myself. Absolutely beside myself.
Do Amish believe in guns?
One bright spot in this story is that the have downgraded the death count. Originally they said six had died. Now they are reporting two students, one young teachers aide were killed before the shooter killed himself.
I'm praying for the injured and the families who must bury their young daughters.
The Amish hunt to provide meat for their tables.
Some Amish hunt. They would not use the guns to protect themselves however, without violating their beliefs. Nor would they use their fists. Not even to protect their family.
I should have been more clear. The Amish don't walk about with a .45 ACP strapped to their hips, lest of all take the thing to school.
I just can't understand how a father of school age children could go to a school, tie up little girls and shoot them. It's beyond me
Not only could I never imagine harming a child - ANY child, I am trying to imagine what could have happened 20 years ago that would cause him to target little Amish girls.
He let everyone else go. He kept only the girls, and tied them up and barred the doors so they couldn't escape.
The man was a beast and a coward.
Makes you wonder how he treated his own children.
It also may not have been a coincidence that he planned this on the day he was supposed to go for a drug test.
I do wonder how he treated his own children.
I wonder why these guys who have a death wish don't go someplace where everybody is armed. Like a shooting range or a police station. Oh, wait. They are cowards.
Now the disclaimers from shooters Wife, he was a loving Husband blah blah blah, not the man I know YEAH RIGHT!
This whole episode was planned & not in a couple of hours.
When the whole truth comes out I'll bet this scum bag had a long history of problems recognized, but untreated!!!
The guy was sick and evil!
I swear, I cannot understand that type of "sickness".
