But I do think that we need to make it very clear what it means to leave a bunch of young girls alone with a man with a gun, just as we've gotten the message what it means to let terrorists take control of an airplane.

Terrible. I can't conceive of an Amish doing this. The poor children. Who in their right mind would seek to harm them? You think you see evil getting low as it can possibly get and then it gets more creative. In the end the sickness of the awful deed lingers on like a haunting refrain in one's soul. The Amish are wonderful people that interact with neighbors and are the first to jump in and help anyone that needs help. They do not deserve this.

Obviously nobody deserves this, but I beg to differ with your previous sentence. There were at least 4 adult women and 25 students including 15 boys in this schoolhouse. This guy was able to bind the girls' ankles without interference -- NOBODY saw fit to "jump in and help". Sorry but that takes 2 hands (unless the girls followed instructions to tie themselves/each other up) so he was not effectively armed while he did this -- yet still nobody stopped him.

I know I wasn't there and it's easy to be an armchair critic, but I think it's really time for people to teach their sons that when the nut with a gun asks all the boys to leave the room, it's time to pick up anything you can and start throwing it at the bastard because what comes next is never good.

Agreed on the demonic possession or obsession. It sounds too supernatural. Just pure evil. And of course, you heard him blaming God. The first words out a guys mouth in my office (non-believer) after hearing this creep was "how could a good God let this happen?"

What I really bet is that this guy's obsession or possession has to do with violent and child pornography. It can be such a powerful force. But hey, no harm and first amendment rights and all that. I will be curious to hear whether he attributes anything to "voices".
