Good point. I think someone showed them to the parents, they weren't aware of them before that. Alexander maybe is the person. Can't remember the first name.

Maybe they're more intelligent than most but we have elementary kids around here that understand it so it boggles my mind why there are FReepers who just don't get it. Unless, as you say, they have suspect motives and agenda's.

The next 5 weeks are going to be rough enough as it is, we don't need their negative crap.

I haven't found the original source that I mentioned, but over on this thread

Top GOP Staffer Forced Out for Role in Page Scandal
ABC NEWS THE BLOTTER ^ | October 04, 2006 | Brian Ross and Rhonda Schwartz

various posters are providing more bits of info about this guy that both bolster and contradict the notion that he's one of the sources of the IMs

Kirk Fordham was chief of staff for Foley for about 10 years then apparently resigned that job "rather suddenly."  For the last couple of years he's been on the staff of another Republican from New York.  Fordham was outed as gay by one of the folks and organizations that definitely is involved in the whole Foley IM mess some time ago.  He has been open about his homosexuality since.  I don't know if the outing is why he left Foley's staff.  Others are saying that he's been involved with the activists that held the IMs and they infer from that that he may be their source.

He's apparently being forced out now, however, because he tried to intervene with ABC to get them to not publish the contents of the IMs, suggesting that Foley would give them an exclusive interview following his resignation in exchange.  ABC turned him down.  Speculation would be that he either was trying to protect Foley in some way, or trying to cover up the contents.  That might be important if he had faked any of the IMs, as releasing the contents would let at least Foley know that someone else wrote the offending IMs (if that is, in fact, what's going on... I think).

Now you know why I'm waiting until we actually have some facts and some ability to examine witnesses and evidence before I'm willing to pass any judgment on just what the hell is going on!!!!!!

As the great Vinni Barbarino (John Travolta) used to say "I'm so confused!"

How can he resign if he was "former"?.........

Because he resigned his post working for Congressman Tom Reynolds who is Chairman of the House Republican Campaign Committee, responsible for getting Pubbies elected to congress.

Everyone is so busy covering their own asses that it's hard to tell what the truth really is.

If we lose any [WH, Senate, House], it will be h@ll trying to get them back.

I see this comment all the time. What is the logic behind it? If Pubs lose a chamber in '06, why does that make it unlikely they can win it back in '08 or '10? If voters think their policies are better in a future election cycle, what's to stop them from giving control back to the Pubs?

I haven't seen ABC say they contacted the parents or the boy before putting the e-mails on their web site.

So my question is, who authorized ABC's disclosure of private e-mail communication, and is doing so a violation of law?

Hastert said he didn't see the e-mails. The e-mails WERE looked at by somebody in Congress, and Hastert COULD have looked at the e-mails if he wanted to.

It seems the republicans were trying to honor the family's wishes, but they still should have involved the entire page board, or AT LEAST the democrat on the board, just so it COULD NOT BE CONSTRUED as a republican coverup.

Remember though that SOMEONE got the e-mails, and leaked them to multiple news sources, and eventually to some obscure blog that posted them and then CREW sent them to ABC.

That doesn't jibe with the parents and kid NOT wanting the e-mails released, so exactly where did they get leaked from?

Hastert's ORIGINAL press release said he had not seen the original e-mails, that they had gone to his staff. His statement was that he had NO RECOLLECTION of seeing the e-mails, but he was not going to DISPUTE the republican who said he DID discuss them with him.

His original statement was a problem -- he needed to get his facts straight in a case like this, because you have to know the democrats are looking for blood.

Alexander backs off claim Hastert knew
Associated Press ^ | October 4, 2006 | Associated Press

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., the congressman who sponsored the page at the heart of the recent Capitol Hill sex scandal furor and initially said Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., "knew about the e-mails that we knew about," including one in which Foley asked the page to send his picture, has now backed off that comment, saying he discussed the e-mails with Hastert's aides, not the speaker himself.

"I guess that's a poor choice of words that I made there," Alexander told AP.

The speaker has said he was not aware of the e-mails when they were discussed with his staff. The No. 2 House Republican, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, and House GOP campaign chairman Rep. Tom Reynolds of New York, said they had spoken with Hastert about a complaint concerning a former page from Louisiana last spring, after Alexander told them about it.

"Top GOP Staffer Reportedly Fired for Role in Page Scandal"

Might I request that we change the title of this thread to reflect a "firing" as the story subsequently said and not a resignation.

The details are coming so fast that I'm starting to get confused.

I have pinged you to the capitulation by Alexander.

The speaker NEVER saw the emails.

Frankly, I don't know if Hastert ever SAW the e-mails, but he KNEW about them, and knew they were not of a sexual nature. Maybe he knew that because the parents of the young man told him that. If that's the case, then he can only rely on what he'd been told by the people closest to the situation. He said he knew NOTHING of the nasty IMs, which apparently were written before the e-mails I mentioned above, but have been held back for the opportune time to release them.
