Piter,
"England has no friends. England has allies, but England has no friends."
Valid when said, valid for all nations in all times.

"The Russians are our competitors in the global marketplace. The last people that should be whining about competition are Americans."
They are our competitors in more than just the global market place. For most of the first 18 years of my 24 years in the Air Force, they were our main enemy. I hope they'll never get back to that status, but I'm not betting on in. I do think we have more in common with them then the Chinese, but I also know things like this take time to work through.
I didn't notice anyone whining about competition, though. Examples?

The leftists will love it. They will likely win the next election and that will be the end of a pro US conservative government. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Russian trade mission show up and a friendship agreement between Russia and a new government if my election forecast is accurate.

It's also very possible that the Russians had no idea where they were.

Russian Tsar Alexander II told once, that Russia has only two faithful allies: Navy and Army. During last 100 years Russia changed radically several times, may be more, than any other country. Invariably was only enmity of West to Russia.

They didn't fly over Iceland. They stayed in international airspace.

When the Bears hit the 12 miles limit, a pair of F15C fighters were on hand to show the Bear pilots all the pretty air to air missiles carried by the F15C. Impressed, the Bears went home. We had film at 11 on the local news and everything.

Right, and Islam is the Religion of Peace.
Next, you'll say there's a viable market for American intellectual property in China.
