The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested.
Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use."
The findings backed those of previous, less rigorous studies, according to Stanford.
Most disturbing was the discovery that some people hid their Internet surfing, or went online to cure foul moods in ways that mirrored alcoholics using booze, according to the study's lead author, Elias Aboujaoude.
"In a sense, they're using the Internet to self-medicate," Aboujaoude said. "And obviously something is wrong when people go out of their way to hide their Internet activity."
According to preliminary research, the typical Internet addict was a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use.

"run keyboards thru the dish machine"
You can also run the CPU unit thru. It will clean your Windows really good!
I don't know about running it through a dishwasher, but I do know that you can completely rinse a keyboard in distilled water and give it enough time to dry and it will work fine.
There is a good reason water is called "the universal solvent"...
wow... I was guessing this thread would get about 10 replies... guess the study is right!
I've found if I don't turn off my PC it plays games of its own during the night....
Hey if we are addicts and can't converse on-line this only means one thing. Local community Freepers getting together face to face for meetings, perfect. And when we travel just like AA we vistit other fellow Freepers in on-line recovery. One way or the other it just means more Freepers. Can't go wrong there.
Tom, we might have to do an intervention in your case...
Oh, come now. What did you expect?
There are MILLIONS of us out there screaming: "WE'RE NOT ADDICTED! WE'RE NOT! Well, maybe just a little. Maybe just the wart..."
I watch the Simpsons on Fox. That's about it. For some reason, my VHF receiption is almost useless, especially on the lower channels, so I couldn't watch 60 Minutes last Sunday (which otherwise I would have, for the first time in ages).
You don't live in Carson City do you? I'm travelling there overnight tomorrow and need a place to stay.
I tried to turn my off one time, and it snapped and growled at me.
I can quit any time. Really I can.
That was just the mother board...I know because, at times, I am a bored mother...
Light-weights!
Internet like I used to drink...
I like that tagline! But I know you're all real people, and I appreciate the knowledge, experience, analysis, humor, skepticism, diff perspectives, great book recommendations, history, industry-specific details, military facts, prayer requests, etc., that FReepers share. And the Photoshopping cracks me UP!
I also appreciate the tone of FR, too; sometimes arguments flare up here and there but mostly, respectful discussions without very much profanity or rudeness.
Thanks, everyone!
The internet is way better than TV at least message boards are interactive. TV you just sit there like a lump getting indoctrinated. Reminds me I have to look some stuff up on Bachman.
Let's have it declared a disability. It interferes with my ability to work. Does anyone have a link to one of those Social Security Attorney's?
